ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Gilmore, Commissioners Erickson, Hagstrom, Hughes, O'Mahony, Root, and Shevchuk. Staff: Richard P. Quadri MINUTES Minutes of the October 1, 1987 meeting were approved as submitted. COMMUNICATIONS Letter to City Manager from Beautification Commission member, Rufina Shevchuk, informing him that she will decline reapplying for another term on the Commis- sion because of a busy schedule. REPORTS GILMORE - Commissioners Gilmore and Shevchuk spoke with the postmaster, Mr. Michael Bosch re newspaper racks. Mr. Bosch indicated that the post office could agree to move the racks back somewhat from the pathway. Commissioner Shevchuk read the article re the newspaper racks in the September 30 Boutique & Villager. HAGSTROM - The parking lot on Donnelly behind Burlingame Hardware and David's delicatessan is littered with cans, paper and other debris. ROOT - There is a great accumulation of litter on the California side of the Burlingame Avenue train station. Director Quadri indicated that the new con- tract the City has with BFI should help alleviate some of that. Commissioner Gilmore suggested perhaps the Commission could communicate in some way to the Chamber of Commerce re the trash in the downtown areas or compile a list of concerns the Commission has regarding the business areas in the City. The Commission agreed and felt that more communication with the Chamber of Com- merce could be one of the Commission's priorities for the coming year. HUGHES - Commissioner Hughes was pleased to report that the Shell gas station on Burlingame Avenue/ECR has cleaned up the trash that has been collecting along the fence. 0`MAHONY - Commissioner O'Mahony contacted Susan Comartin of the Hillsborough Water Conservation Committee. The Committee's main focus is on water shortage and the proper utilization of water resources. The Committee is interested in brainstorming and/or doing some joint projects with the Beautification Com- mission. After a brief discussion the Commission suggested that perhaps the Spring Seminar would be a place where water conservation could be discussed, and that getting school children involved in water conservation would be some- thing the Water Conservation Committee might want to explore. OLD BUSINESS Children's Art - Commissioner Gilmore spoke with Bob Osberg of Burlingame Inter- mediate School, who indicated that the schools might be interested in restoring Children's Art - (cont'd.) or repairing some of the deteriorating art work. Mr. Osberg expressed a concern about liability to the school district. Discussion followed as to the best way to approach this matter. It was felt that the City may be able to give some assistance if the School District wants to become involved in this project. Per- haps a constitution bicentennial theme would be appropriate. Director Quadri stated that this may be something that could be coordinated with the children's librarian. Additionally, perhaps Mr. Osberg could put the Commission in contact with someone from the District that could help to carry this project out. NEW BUSINESS Priority Setting - The Commission discussed priorities for the coming year and came up with several items to consider: * Tree planting in business areas. * Replacement of trees under utility lines. * Promoting the Landscape Award. * Relandscaping of the Broadway medians from 101 to California Drive. * Cleanup solutions in the Murchison-Trousdale area on E1 Cam- ino Real. * Establishing a closer working relationship with the Chamber of Commerce to target items of concern in the business areas. These items and any others added will be discussed at the next meeting, and a priority list will be established. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:05 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Kar ene Harvey Recording Secretary
