September 4, 1987
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to
order on Thursday, August 6, 1987 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall by Chairman Gil-
more.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairman Gilmore, Commissioners Hagstrom, Hughes, O'Mahony, Root, and
Shevchuk.
Absent: Commissioner Erickson
MINUTES
Minutes of the August 6, 1987 meeting were approved as submitted.
COMMUNICATIONS
Letter to Post Master from City Manager with copy to S.F. Newspaper Agency re:
relocation of newspaper racks at Broadway Post Office.
REPORTS
PARK DEPARTMENT - Tree pruning contract for 1987-88 was awarded to Timberline.
Easton/Hillside stairway has been scheduled for pruning in the next week or two.
In conjunction with the Farm Advisory, State Forestry, and DED specialists, the
Park Dept. is looking into a disease resistant 'Liberty Elm' to be replanted
where elms were removed . . . this would be the 1st experiment of its kind in
California.
�. The Constitution Bicentennial Celebration will be celebrated at City Hall on
Thursday, September 17 at 12:45 p.m. The Park Department will be planting red,
white, and blue annuals with shrubs in the background in what was once the foun-
tain . . . bell ringing and the Burlingame High School band will be a couple of
the highlights of the celebration.
GILMORE - Bob Osberg, V. Principal of Burlingame Intermediate School, has men-
tioned that they would like to see the children's art removed from in front of
Kern's Jewelers . . . art is old and deteriorating. After some discussion, Com-
missioner O'Mahony moved that the Commission communicate with the elementary
school district to discuss if some new children's art could be created to re-
place that which is deteriorating to commemorate the bicentennial; seconded. The
motion carried unanimously. Commissioner Erickson will send a letter to the
elementary school district when she returns from vacation.
SHEVCHUK - Petrinis' garbage area (Magnolia Ave. side) is filthy . . . sidewalk
is greasy, area is smelly, and seems to be a health hazard. Commission dis-
cussed the fact that even though the Commission has corresponded with Petrini's
in the past there has been little or no improvement. The Commission will ask
the City Attorney to send a letter to Petrini's.
ROOT - Would like the commission to set priorities for the coming year. Priority
setting will be on the next agenda.
HUGHES - There has been no improvement at the Hughes gas station on the corner
�.• of Burlingame Ave. and ECR re debris and litter even though several commissioners
have complained to him personnally. The Commission will send a letter to Mr.
Hughes requesting some action be taken.
REPORTS - (cont'd.)
O'MAHONY - The Board of Directors of the Floribunda Villas (1427 Floribunda) thank
the Park Department for the replacement of the tree in front of that complex.
Commissioner O'Mahony is also interested in the Commission setting priorities and
feels that setting at least 2 priorities for the coming year and completing them
would be a good start.
HAGSTROM - As part of the Bicentennial Celebration the 'friends of the Library' will
be putting on a Fashion Show on September 13 at 2:30 p.m. Commissioner Hagstrom
will be directing the Fashion Show.
OLD BUSINESS
Newspaper Racks - The Commission discussed the letter the City Manager sent to the
Post Master re placement of newspaper racks at the Broadway Post Office . . . to
date there has been no change.. Commissioners Gilmore and Shevchuk will make an
appointment with the Post Master, Mr. Michael Bosch, to further discuss the pro-
blem with the newspaper racks.
Landscape Award Selection - In discussing the criteria for small/medium and large
business, the Commission agreed that only the physical plant is considered. The
following businesses will be presented with an award at the Community Dinner on
October 10 at the Embassy Suites/Bobby McGees:

- Studio B Art Gallery/Railroad Landscaping

- Marriott Hotel
1000 Bayshore
The remaining nominees: Munkdale, 1616 Rollins Rd.: Gullivers, 1699 Bayshore;
Guittard Chocolate, 10 Guittard Road; Clementina Ltd., 1657 Rollins Rd.; and
Bay Park Plaza, 577 Airport Blvd. will receive letters of commendation.
The Commission further discussed ways of promoting the Landscape Award such as:
picture and article in the Boutique, Times, and Progress; several months prior to
selection an announcement in the Chamber newsletter indicating that nominees will
be considered. The Commission appointed Chairman Gilmore to contact Karen Key
to have something put in the Chamber Newsletter following this year's Community
Dinner.
Water Conservation Committee - A committee is being formed of Hillsborough and
Burlingame residents and would like a representative from the Beautification Com-
mission. Water Awareness week will be observed October 19-24. Commissioner
O'Mahony will call Susan Comartin to find out further details.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
