HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - BC - 1988.03.03BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION March 3, 1988 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order on Thursday, March 3, 1988 at 5:30 p.m. by Vice Chairperson O'Mahony. ROLL CALL Present: Vice Chairperson O'Mahony, Commissioners Erickson, Hagstrom, Hughes, Root, and Ward. Absent: Commissioner Gilmore Guests: Timothy Brosnan COMMUNICATIONS Letter from Timothy Brosnan (Trico Pacific) on behalf of Mr. & Mrs. Nello Lovi, 2405 Easton Dr., requesting permission to remove two black acacia trees. Letter to Mrs. Carolyn Hipps, 1649 Balboa Ave., from Director Quadri informing her of the Commissions' decision on removal of a liquidambar tree. Letter to Charles T. Izmirian, 1425 Bellevue, from Director Quadri advising him that his request to remove a black acacia in front of above address will be heard by the Commission at the March 3 meeting. Letter and Heritage Tree Designation form to Mr. Hanson, 1516 Highway Rd., from Director Quadri for possible Heritage Tree Designation of a redwood tree. Letter to Jean S.McConnell, Garden Study Club, from Director Quadri thanking the Garden Study Club for their $100 donation for Arbor Day tree planting. Letter to Lucky Store, 1477 Chapin Ln., from the Beautification Commission re- questing the litter along the fence of their parking lot be cleaned up. �..r Resolution No. 13-88 -- Resolution Establishing Procedures For Commission Appoint- ments. Letter from Herbert and Elizabeth Williamson, 1565 Ralston Ave., requesting the removal of a Eucalyptus tree in the northwest corner of Heritage Park. Memo to Chairwoman Jeannie Gilmore re Introduction of Commission at Commissioners' Dinner Friday, March 4, 1988. Prior to commencement of the meeting Vice Chairperson O'Mahony recognized Timothy Brosnan. Mr. Brosnan stated that if permission was granted for the removal of two black acacia trees they would plant replacement trees. REPORTS ROOT - Dale Perkins from Burlingame Intermediate School is considering coordinating the repair of the children's art throughout the City. Currently there are 11 pieces of children's art from Franklin School at the Main Post Office. HUGHES - Lucky Store parking lot has yet to be cleaned of litter. O'MAHONY - Met with Ross Bruce (AVR Realty) re the Broadway Merchants Asso. pro- gress: Mr. Bruce had the sidewalk steamcleaned in front of his establishment and there is a marked difference . . . the Association is still trying to convince other merchants to have their sidewalks steamcleaned but cost is a problem. Mr. Bruce also reported to Commissioner O'Mahony that the city -owned easement behind his establishment needs to be cleaned. Director Quadri will determine responsi- bility and report back. ~ ERICKSON - Commissioner Erickson suggested that the Water Dept. could provide information on tree policies to new residents as they come into the area. Com- missioner O'Mahony suggested the Park Department initiate letting new homeowners know about policies and services by providing a flyer of some sort. REPORTS (Cont'd.) ERICKSON - Commissioner Erickson reported that the Broadway center divide, east of the RR tracks has weeds growing on it. Director Quadri will again report to Cal - trans. QUADRI - Received payment on a bill for illegal pruning at 825 Maple Ave. with an apology from the landowner stating that they no longer reside at that residence. Bills in the amount of $1,504.32 have gone out for illegal pruning of city trees at 1312 Castillo, 1309 Castillo, 800 Maple Ave., 1800 Devereux, and 801 Burlin- game Ave. Director Quadri presented pictures of the illegal pruning to the Com- mission. Inspected the trees at McKinley School . . . all trees are blooming. Sister of Landowner at 732 Farringdon will come to April 7 Commission meeting re- questing the expired permit for tree removal at that address be reinstated. A chart listing priorities and goals of Commission will be ready at next meeting. Received a call from Betty Stout of the Garden Study Club asking for ideas on donations. Director Quadri will suggest two possibilities: 1) Green House for the Park Department nursery, and 2) Entrance planter and sign to Washington Park. OLD BUSINESS Arbor Day - Mar. 7 - Flowering pear trees will be planted during the Arbor Day Ceremonies in Washington Park on the corner of Carolan Ave. and North Ln. There will be 60-70 student representatives along with city officials. Spring Garden Seminar - Mar. 26 - The seminar will feature speakers on tree prun- ing and lawn care. Commission offered suggestions as to speakers. Newsrack Committee - Director Quadri reported that the survey has been completed. He will submit results of the survey at the next Commission meeting. 1425 Bellevue/Request for Removal - Director Quadri reported that the request for removal is because the Black Acacia is interfering with a private cedar tree. Homeowner has agreed to remove and replace with a suitable variety. Director Quadri had no comments except that if removed, replacement would not be required at this time. After a brief discussion Commission decided to hold this item over to the April 7 meeting because of some confusion as to which tree would be removed. Director Quadri will send a map showing location of the tree with March 3 Commis- sion minutes. NEW BUSINESS 2405 Easton/Request for Removal - Request is for the removal of 2 black acacia trees due to unsightly appearance, age of trees, traffic visability problem. Commission will render a decision at the April 7, 1988 Commission meeting.
