October 5, 1989
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was
called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chairman O'Mahony.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairman O'Mahony, Commissioners Erickson, Gilmore,
Hagstrom, Peeters, Root and Ward.
Staff: Director Quadri
MINUTES - Minutes of the September 7, 1989 were approved as submitted.
Letter from California Oak Foundation to Commissioner Peeters re
volunteering for the Year of the Oak activities.
Letter to National Arbor Day Foundation from Commissioner Peeters
seeking information on the Trees of America program.
Letter to Aesculap Instruments, 875 Stanton Rd., from Director Quadri on
being chosen for the 1989 Landscape Award for small businesses.
Letter to Koll Company from Director Quadri on being chosen for the 1989
Landscape Award for a large business at 1 Bay Plaza.
Letter from Mary Blythe, requesting Cub Scout Den 4 be part of the Arbor
Day tree planting ceremony in March 1990.
Newsrack Ordinance packet submitted by Commissioner Gilmore for
submission to Council.
REPORTS
OUADRI - Weeds have been cut down at 1133 Chula Vista.
A Warning Notice will be sent to the property owner on California Drive
(north of Trousdale) re grass on sidewalk.
Park Department will send a letter to resident on the 1400 block of
Alvarado for illegal street tree pruning.
Sycamore pruning will begin the first part of November in the Occidental
area.
O'MAHONY - Sandy Mangolds from the Millbrae Beautification Commission
requests information re Burlingame's Beautification Commission's by-
laws and focus.
'Has received complaints about the maintenance of median islands in
parts of the City.
Asked if P.G.&E.'s sycamore pruning schedule is coordinated with that of
the Park Department. Director Quadri stated that P.G.&E. trims every 18
mos. as opposed to the Park Department's schedule of every 4 years.
Coordinating with P.G.&E. would double the cost.
Asked what can be done for the trees that drip. Director Quadri stated
that the Park Department does some spraying but contracts much
of the tree spraying throughout the city. Residents need to contact the
Park Department for problems related to city trees.

GILMORE - Has received complaints about shrubs and hedges hanging over
sidewalks and is wondering what can be done. Director Quadri explained
the ordinances to the Commission re sidewalk and street clearances. If
addresses are reported to the Park Department a Warning Notice will be
sent to the resident.
PEETERS - Magic Incorporated (a non-profit organization) is willing to
go to the schools and promote the importance of trees in the
environment. Their goal is for the planting of 1 tree per Peninsulan by
the year 2000. Commissioner Peeters believes this to be a great program
for the schools to tie in with the City's Arbor Day celebrations. If
the Commission is in favor of this program, Commissioner Peeters would
like to present it to Mr. Heron, principal of McKinley Elementary
School. Commission agreed.
ERICKSON - Requested as to the reason of the Euc removal on Burlingame
Avenue across from the tennis courts. Director Quadri stated that the
tree had heart rot and removal was necessary.
Requested when the new Eucs will be planted at the new 101 offramp.
Director Quadri stated that landscaping has been planned for this winter
which will include the planting of the Eucs.
HAGSTROM - There is still grease behind Petrini's; no progress has been
made; pallets and racks are out on the sidewalk. Director Quadri will
report to the City Attorney.
Elm tree on 1300 block of Alvarado looks bad. Director Quadri stated
that the tree is not suffering from DED. Park Department will deadwood
and liquid fertilize.
Stairs at Easton have been cleaned up.
ROOT - Children's art in front of City Hall is still under construction
--- more tiles had to be made.
Wishes scheduling for street sweeping could be set up. The job can't be
done because cars are parked on the street.
OLD BUSINE
Newsrack Committee - Commissioner Gilmore went over the changes on the
proposed ordinance and reported on her meeting with the City Attorney;
all the newspapers contacted are in agreement with the proposed
ordinance. Commissioner Peeters moved the proposed newsrack ordinance
be submitted to the City Council for study; seconded. The motion
carried unanimously.
Landscape Award 1989 - Chairman O'Mahony will make award presentations
at the Community Dinner on October 14 at the Holiday Crowne Plaza.
There being no further business and no COMMENTS FROM THE FLOOR the
meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
