HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - BC - 1989.09.07BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION September 7, 1989 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Vice -Chairman Root. ROLL CALL Present: Vice -Chairman Root, Commissioners Erickson, Gilmore, Hagstrom, Peeters, Ward, and Chairman O'Mahony arriving at 6:15 p.m. Staff: Director Quadri MINUTES - Minutes of the August 3, 1989 meeting were approved as submitted. CORRESPONDENCE Letter from Director Quadri to: Ann Offield, 109 Occidental, informing her of the Council decision to uphold the decision of the Beautification Commission to deny her request for removal of a city sycamore in front of her property. Michael Collom, 1530 Albemarle, informing him that the City Council has scheduled his appeal hearing requesting removal of 3 eucalyptus on E1 Camino behind 1530 Albemarle for September 6, 1989. Revised copy of proposed Newsrack Ordinance. Letter and flyer from Robert Rivera, City of San Mateo, regarding the fifth annual Bayfront Clean-up on September 16th. REPORTS OUADRI - Michael Collom's (1530 Albemarle) appeal to the City Council for the removal of 3 eucalyptus on El Camino was denied by a 4-1 vote to uphold the Beautification Commission's decision. The first elms for the Dutch Elm disease research program arrived from Ohio and are now growing in San Jose. They will be planted in the fall of 1990. ROOT - Mark Peeters received many awards for his floral and gardening, displays at the San Mateo County Fair. Commissioner Root reported on the children's art and indicated that she is working very closely with the schools on this project. Commissioner Root reported on several problem areas in the City: Overgrown weeds at 1133 Chula Vista; area between US Sprint and Holiday Inn is unkept which is the responsibility of Embassy Suites; and the walkway along the bayside behind Kincades is not even. HAGSTROM - The area between the post office and behind Sarginias on Broadway is very messy and weeds are growing under the newspaper racks on Capuchino. HAGSTROM (Cont'd.) - Homeowner on the 1400 block of Alvarado illegally removed a limb from a city tree. ERICKSON - Two trees on the 200 block of Arundel appear to be dying. Homeowner on Arundel planted a pine tree on city easement without a permit; a warning notice will be sent requesting tree be removed. In response to a question, Director Quadri reviewed the Commission appointment procedure. Commissioner Gilmore completes her second term, and Commissioners O'Mahony and Root will each complete their first term in October of this year. PEETERS - Commissioner Peeters commented on the pollution the buses are putting out with their black smoke. He mentioned that he spoke with a Burlingame business person who is concerned about this. Director Quadri stated that this is under state control. WARD - Neighbors are asking when the sycamores in his area will be trimmed. Director Quadri will check the schedule. GILMORE - The proposed newsrack ordinance has been drafted and the committee will meet with the reps from the newspapers again. The Commission will consider the revised ordinance and make their recommend to Council. O'MAHONY - Grass is growing in the sidewalk north of the convalescent hospital on California Drive. OLD BUSINESS 1989 Landscape Awards - The Commission chose 1 Bay Plaza, 1350 Bayshore Blvd., as the winner for a large business and Aesculap Instruments, 875 Stanton Rd., as the winner for a small business. Awards will be presented at the Community Dinner in October. Signature Properties at 1199 Howard Ave. and Noel's at 1211 Broadway will receive certificates of recognition at a later date. Arbor Day - 1990 - Commissioner Peeters has contacted many agencies for educational resources about trees. There appears to be a lot of avenues by which to educate students about our trees and the environment. There being no further business and no COMMENTS FROM THE FLOOR the meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m. in memory of Commissioner Gilmore's mother who recently passed away.
