REPORTS
QJADRI - Director Quadri again reported the overgrown shrubs at Broadway
and Rollins Rd. to CalTrans and the shrubs have been entirely removed.
A mature Sycamore was removed at 164 Chapin Ln. Upon investigation it was
found that the contractor had approved plans which showed that the tree
would be removed, but that the Park Dept. had no received the plans for
review. In response to Commission concerns, Director Quadri stated that
this has happened before of this year, but he is working with Public
Works/Building Department to establish procedures that will prevent this.
RO P - A few children's art items have been refurbished. Those on the
City Hall grounds may need to be replaced due to deteriorated condition.
Asked Director Quadri what steps the Commission could take for
beautification of the Broadway islands. Director Quadri stated that
CalTrans may do the project but if not the Commission can discuss it
project. The Commission will wait to see if CalTrans initiates this
project.
ERICKSON - Asked if foliage can be planted on the fence along 101 at
Rollins Rd. and Winchester. Director Quadri stated that the area along
101 on Rollins Rd. is Caltrans maintenance territory and that requests of
that nature should be directed to the CalTrans office in Foster City.
PRFTERS - Has one speaker lined up for next year's Arbor Day promotion to
the schools -- is getting information on "the year of the oak".
OLD BUSINESS
Request for removal of 2 alossy privits at 142 Channing - After
discussion, Commissioner Hagstrom moved the request for removal be denied;
seconded. Motion carried unanimously.
Request for removal of Cottonwood tree at 1025 Paloma - Director Quadri
stated that since the request came from 1021 Paloma, the Commission at
their last meeting requested they hear from the property owner at 1025
Paloma before rendering a decision. Director Quadri has received no
response from either party. Decision will be held over until the property
owner of 1025 Paloma responds.
NEW BUSINESS
Request for removal of 8 Dines on La Mesa median - Director Quadri
reported that a petition had been received from residents on the 1500
block of La Mesa Drive requesting the removal of 8 pines due to tree
branches scratching cars, misshapen due to frequent pruning, trees too
large for area; trees block view. Staff report indicates that the trees
are lowered and cut frequently and are unable to grow to natural height;
would agree with removal and replacement at applicants' expense.
Comments from residents in attendance: Trees were planted by former
resident and previous park staff would not allow removal when trees were
smaller; trees block views; City has to maintain frequently; variety of
tree is too large for median. When asked if residents would be willing to
bear the expense of removal and replacement, comments were of a
cooperative nature.
Commission will consider the matter at the August 3, 1989 Commission
meeting.
Landscape Award Committee - The following commissioners will serve on the
1989-90 Landscape Award Committee: Rosalie O'Mahony, Mark Peeters, and
William Ward. The Committee will provide a list of nominees at the August
3, 1989 meeting. To promote interest articles will be placed in the
Boutique Villager, the San Mateo Times, and the Chamber Chatter. The
awards will be presented at the Community Dinner in October.

information and showed a video on the Bay Cleanup scheduled for September
16, 1989 from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon at Rider Park in San Mateo. Cleanup is
done during low tide so debris can be picked up. The idea was generated
from the Coastal Commission, and will coincide with "Coast Week".
