HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - BC - 1989.03.02BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION March 2, 1989 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chairman Gilmore. ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Gilmore, Commissioners, Hagstrom, O'Mahony, Peeters, Root, Ward. Absent: Commissioner Erickson Staff: Director Quadri MINUTES Minutes of the February 2, 1989 meeting were approved as submitted. CORRESPONDENCE Letter and $100 donation from the Garden Study Club of the Peninsula toward purchase of trees for Arbor Day. Bill from Electroplex for the Spring Garden Seminar banner. Letter to Munkdale from Director Quadri thanking them for their donation of 6 - 36" box liquidambars. Trees will be planted at Bayside Park. REPORTS OUADRI Paving of Parking Lot C is in current contract; paving should begin in the Spring. A 25' Eucalyptus on the corner of Adeline & ECR was lost during the 3/1/89 storm and a Birch tree on Eastmoor fell on a car. Resident from 1530 Albemarle may be submitting a letter for the removal of 3 Eucalyptus on City easement behind his property on ECR. Upon inspection trees seem to be healthy and pose no hazard. During 3/1/89 storm a large limb fell from a Eucalyptus under the maintenance jurisdiction of CalTrans and caused damage to the resident's fence. Resident thought the limb had come from one of the trees on City right-of-way, but inspection by City staff proved that the limb had come from a CalTrans tree. CalTrans has been notified. The children's artwork on the Bellevue side of City Hall has been vandalized. Many tiles were broken off. ROOT - Spring Garden Seminar banner will be hung on Monday, March 6. Art from the children at Lincoln School is currently being displayed at the post office on Park Rd. Commissioner Root requested that copies of the Commission goals be L,, provided each Commissioner by the next meeting. HAGSTROM - On the corner of Broadway & Drake trees look dead. Director Quadri indicated that a transformer dropped PCB's on the resident's yard. P.G.& E. sent out crews that removed anything that the PCB's might have touched. Tree was chopped back and will need to be removed and replaced by P.G.& E. GILMORE - Commissioner Gilmore confirmed with the Commission plans for the luncheon for Dorothea Hughes which is to follow the Arbor Day ceremonies. OLD BUSINESS Newsrack Ordinance - Commissioner Gilmore is continuing her dialogue with the local newspapers on the proposed ordinance; most seem to be in favor with the wording of the proposed ordinance. Arbor Day - Director Quadri stated that the ceremonies will begin at 10:00 a.m. Students from the local elementary schools will make brief presentations; Cable T.V. will film the event for a later broadcast on Cable Channel 24, March 9, 16, 23, & 30 at 5:30 p.m. Trees in memory of Commissioner Gilmore's husband, Bill, and past Commissioner Dorothea Hughes' daughter, Dorothea, will be planted. Spring Garden Seminar - Director Quadri stated that the presentations by Paula Blanchfield and Clifford Jones will focus on water management strategies for drought plagued landscaping. Cable T.V., radio, newspapers, and the Chamber Newsletter will be promoting the event scheduled for March 18, 1989. Ester Cummings from the Library will have a book display at the event and the Commission will make arrangement for refreshments.
