February 2, 1989
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was
called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chairman Gilmore.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairman Gilmore, Commissioners Erickson, Hagstrom, O'Mahony,
Peeters, Root, and Ward.
Staff: Director Quadri
MINUTES
Minutes of the January 5, 1989 meeting were approved as submitted.
CORRESPONDENCE
Copy of article from the January 14, 1989 Times re street tree programs
in the City of Burlingame as well as other cities.
Memo from the City Attorney advising that "The city cannot force
publications into modular racks unless we are willing to pay for them."
And, that "Such a program is voluntary."
REPORTS
OUADRI - Director Quadri met with Lisa Cisneros of the Boutique re
illegal pruning, ivy and shrubs in public rights -of -way, and dogs in
parks.
Director Quadri met with the Ossipoff's of 1645 Balboa and reached an
out -of -court settlement re the repair/replacement of their driveway.
The City will only be responsible for the portion within the City's
right-of-way. Currently, the Park Dept. has not received an updated
price for the work to be done.
The California Conservation Corps has been working on the trails in the
Mills Canyon area.
ROOT - Commissioner Root brought color swatches for the Spring Garden
Seminar banner. The Commission chose a green background w/yellow
lettering and an alternative of white letters on green. The banner
will read "Spring Garden Seminar - Burlingame Recreation Center - March
18 at 9:30 a.m. - 344-6386 ".
PEETERS - Expressed concern about lots that are left vacant for
extended periods of time such as gas stations. Director Quadri stated
the Planning Commission would have jurisdiction over this area. If the
Beautification Commission has a concern about this, a letter from the
Commission could be directed to the Planning Department.
O'MAHONY - The Times ran an article stating that a San Mateo City
planner mentioned Burlingame's Heritage Park as a source of grief to
the neighborhood. Director Quadri stated that Heritage Park occasion-
ally has problems with youth down in the creek area, but all parks have
�' some type of problems; Burlingame is fortunate to have fewer than most.

ERICKSON - Commissioner Erickson stated that she has also been
concerned about the vacant lots created by gas stations and other
businesses.
HAGSTROM - Parking Lot C, behind the Crocker Building, has ruts and is
very dangerous.
OLD BUSINESS
Newsracks - Commissioner Gilmore is continuing to speak with newspaper
representatives and provide the Commission with a list of people she
has spoken to and the letters she sent to the various newspapers. Com-
missioner Gilmore reported on the feed -back she has received so far and
the Commission discussed the possible changes to proposed ordinance.
Arbor Day - The Commission discussed Arbor Day, March 7, at Pershing
Park and tree planting in memory of past Commissioner Dorothea Hughes
daughter, Dorothea, and in memory of Commissioner Gilmore's husband,
Bill. Director Quadri stated correspondence re Arbor Day will be sent
to schools, officials, and organizations.
Spring Garden Seminar - Director Quadri stated that Paula Blanchfield
and Clifford Jones from Ransohoff, Blanchfield, Jones, Inc., Landscape
Architects, will speak at the seminar re drought tolerant plantings for
residential gardens.
