Spring Garden Seminar (Date) VI. REPORTS A. Park Director B. Chairman C. Commissioners VII. FROM THE FLOOR 15 July 1994 City Beautification Commissioner 501 Primrose Road Burlingame, California Dear Commissioner, A mid -sized, city -owned magnolia in the parking strip in front of my home is in conflict with a magnificent, mature, "protected" blue cedar in my neighbor's yard. Surely the unfortunate and very ill- conceived placement of this magnolia -- directly under the cedar's canopy (see Photo A) -- was done before your time. Of course, this magnolia has had no where to grow except into the cedar. The pruning it has received to date has left it aesthetically unbalanced (see Photo B). The inevitable result of this relationship, it seems to me, is that the magnolia will eventually require removal. While I highly respect and applaud the City's policy of tree protection, in this instance I urge you to remove the tree now and not replace it. Steve Porter, the City Arborist, has already viewed this situation and agrees with me, in principle, but expained that his charter prevents him from recommending removal. Thank you for your open-minded consideration of this request. Nancy Locke 1384 Hillside Circle Burlingame, CA 94010 340-9647 cc: G. Hansen N%..
