To Whom it May Concern:
I am writing this letter to you, to ask your consideration of a remedy to a
persistent and expensive problem. Our family has owned a home at 1021
Paloma Avenue since 1980. Next door to our property at 1025 Paloma ,
there is a very large and mature cottonwood tree. This tree has a chronic
infestation of aphids, and as a result has caused considerable property
damage to our family's cars. Throught the years we have petitioned the
city to help us with the tree's disease and resultant damage. In spite of
agressive trimming and spraying, the tree continues to " rain " a fine
areosol of sticky material that soon hardens into a laquer-like substance.
I have politely presented this dilema to the current owner twice, and he
has failed to answer my request to remove the tree.
To this date, we have had to completely strip and repaint my husband's
Jaguar. My father's 1991 Lincoln Continental also had to be repainted as
a result of merely visiting our home occasionaly and parking on the street.
My one month old Mitsubishi Montero is now covered with hardened resin
drops. My daughter's Saturn is also completely covered by these dots . My
husband's Jaguar is in the same condition that it was in before it was re-
painted. Our garage is too narrow to hold any of our cars and the driveway
and street parking spots are in the direct line of this tree and it's spray.
During the winter, this tree, because it is so diseased, drops large and
dangerous limbs . The limbs that do fall, are usually hollow and dead.
Often , during the summer months, you can see a wide band of ants
marching up the side of this tree. Last week, the tree was sprayed, as I
watched from my upstairs window , I noticed that the spray never reached
up any farther than the mid -line of this tree. I understand that the st'eet
department has the spraying records for this cottonwood tree, and I think
it will be very apparent to you that there is a long history of problems.
I do not think it fair that the owner can ignore the incredible amount of
property damage that we have incurred, because he does not want the tree
to come down . The reality is, that we will have to go on having our cars
`., repainted at a cost to us and our insurance company. It seems very wrong
that one person can decide something that has substancial financial
impact on another , when the alternative is so obviously the logical
remedy. My fear is that our insurance company will eventually refuse
payment of these claims, or cancel us altogether.
I would be very happy to have you inspect the cars and their damage, if you
wish.
The remedy that I am asking for is to have the tree removed and replaced
with a Large, mature tree. I would be quite happy to help deflect a portion
of the cost of the tree replacement. Please understand that we have tried
patiently for years to remedy this problem, but we are now facing the re-
painting of three vehicles that will need attention again within months if
this is not attended to.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I can be reached at

RE: REQUEST FOR REMOVAL OF COTTONWOOD TREE AT 1025 PALOMA AVE
(FOR DISCUSSION AT OCTOBER 5, 1995 MEETING)
Dear Beautification Commission:
I regret that I cannot attend your meeting on October 5th but, as the owner of the property at 1025
Paloma Avenue, I am writing to request that you do not remove the tree in front of my house.
I purchased my house almost three years ago, and among the features of the house that appealed to
me were the mature trees that exist on the property. I appreciate the fact that Burlingame has
always demonstrated a commitment to the preservation of mature trees, as evidenced by the City's
slogan, "City of Trees".
While I have lived here, my neighbor at 1021 Paloma Avenue has indicated several times that she
was concerned with the Cottonwood tree in front of my house and the damage it may have caused
to her cars. My neighbor asked that I have the tree destroyed. I sympathize with my neighbor's
concerns, but I do not believe it is right to destroy a healthy tree that has been here much longer
than we have just because of the paint on a car. I therefore asked the City of Burlingame to treat
the tree as needed. The City has been very responsive in trimming and spraying the tree, and it is
now in very good shape.
I own two cars myself. I keep one of them in my garage, and usually leave the other in my
driveway. Whenever I leave a car in the driveway, it often ends up covered with Pine sap and
needles from the Pine tree in my neighbor's yard at 1029 Paloma Avenue. Although this is
annoying, and potentially damaging to the paint on my car, I would never propose that we kill my
neighbor's tree just to save my car's paint job. I would either put the car in my garage, or
purchase a car cover to protect its finish.
I sincerely hope the Council does not decide to remove this tree. It has been proven that mature
trees add significant value to a property, and I believe that removal of the tree in question would
significantly detract from the aesthetics and value of my property.
Sincerel
