Footnotes: (1) Brachychiton populneus, "Bottle Tree."Roots are disruptive/destructive to sidewalk. Few are selected by citizens. (2) Cinnamomum camphor, "Camphor." Majestic evergreen to 50'. Bulbous trunk. Some spring leaf drop. (3) Eucalyptus microtheca. Extensively used in E. Bay; 30 - 40', compact. Not root -invasive, so doesn't lift pavement. (4) Magnolia Grandiflora, "Samuel Sommer," "Russet," or "St. Mary." Smaller and better suited than Magnolia grandiflora. (5) Robinia ambigua, "Idaho Locust. Retain but note that needs early pruning to control shape and to encourage the development of a central leader. (6) Prunus serrulata, "Kwanzan Japanese Flowering Cherry." Removed from all lists due to propensity to develop fatal cancer; gawky; sparse leaves. (7) Pyrus kamakawii, "Evergreen Pear." Remove from all Official Tree Lists due to high maintenance requirement and propensity to develop fungus. (8) Crataegus phaenopyrum, "Washington Thorn" and Koelreuteria paniculata, "Golden Rain Tree." Relocated from List for Planting Strips 3' Wide or,Under. Inform interested citizens that Koelreuteria paniculata, "Golden Rain Tree" has berry drop, thus is potentially messy; better for lawn than adjacent to driveway or sidewalk. Needs early pruning to give sufficient canopy elevation. (9) Eucalyptus microtheca. Extensively used in E. Bay; 30 - 40', compact. Not root -invasive, so doesn't lift pavement. (10) Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer.' More upright than Pyrus kamakawii. (11) Crataegus phaenopyrum, "Washington Thorn" and Koelreuteria paniculata, "Golden Rain Tree." Moved to List for Planting Strips Y to 6' Wide to accommodate canopy breadth. (12) Metrosideros excelsus, "New Zeland Christmas Tree." Messy; frost sensitive; limbs subject to breakage; high maintenance requirement; can't be pruned to a single leader. Too big & bushy for 3' planting strip. (13) Podocarpus gracilior, "African Fern Pine." Insufficient canopy elevation to accommodate pedestrian/vehicular traffic nearby. Requires considerable maintenance to retain shape. Big ones get top-heavy. Remove from all Lists. (14) Prunus serrulata, "Kwanzan Japanese Flowering Cherry." Removed from all lists due to propensity to develop fatal cancer; gawky; sparse leaves. (15) Cordyline agavacea, "Yucca." Strong central leader. High canopy doesn't interfere with vehicular traffic; clean; pest free. Unique form offers alternative style. Good for especially narrow strips. (16) Lagerstromia indica, "Crape Myrtle." 'Indian Tribe ' varieties are mildew resistant. Drought tolerant; relatively upright; single leader; summer blooming. (17) Prunus yeodensis, "Yoshino Flowering Cherry" and Prunus yeodensis 'Akebono,' "Flowering Cherry." Substitutes for Prunus serrulata, "Kwanzan Japanese Flowering Cherry." 40 (18) Melaleuca linarifolia, "Flaxleaf Paperbark." Retain for its unique visual interest, but locate a better sample site location than what is currently on Official Tree List (i.e., City Hall, employee Parking lot). (19) Prunus serrulata, "Kwanzan Japanese Flowering Cherry." Remove from all lists due to propensity to develop fatal cancer; gawky; sparse leaves. (20) Pyrus kamakawii, "Evergreen Pear." Remove from all Official Tree Lists due to high maintenance requirement and propensity to develop fungus. (21) Cercis leguminosae, "Redbud. Small decidious tree; red blooms in spring preceed leaves; slow growing. Cercis occidentalis is drought tolerant. Trees To Be Evaluated by Porter/Richmond for One Year and Potentially Added: Ulmus, "Frontier Elm." New variety on market; water -loving; fast-growing. Newly planted on Cambridge. Acer bua erg anum, "Trident Maple." Acer campestre, "Hedge Maple." Hornbean (CaMinus). Deciduous; hardy; well-behaved; relatively small shade tree; long lived; not subject to disease; low maintenance. Note: Regarding trees subject to removal from Official Lists: An exception provision seems warranted to allow the future replanting of a tree that has been deleted, but which was previously included on Official List, in situations in which matching another existing tree is an issue. However, such replantings should be limited to one replacement in the same location. Suggestion: Regarding the next Spring Garden Seminar: Consider adding "Street Tree Survival, The Basic Needs of a Newly -planted Tree," as a topic. Maybe show the video on pruning which is currently under development. /-0 --111.1 NdJ A JIM -.n N IA ---------- CITY CITY OF BURLINGAME 4,V%4- 0I RL F!6AME PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT 850 Burlingame Avenue, Burlingame, California 94010-2899 Telephone (650) 696-3770 • Parks i Trees (650) 696-7245 ., 4PO""" Fax (650) 696-7216 • E-mail: burlrec(,c—v.aol.com September 4, 1998 Rosanna Myres 2304 Poppy Drive Burlingame, CA 94010 RE: REQUEST FOR EXTENSION TO MEET PLANTING REQUIREMENTS FOR PRIVATE TREE REMOVAL PERMIT AT 2304 POPPY DRIVE At its meeting of September 3, 1998, the Burlingame Beautification Commission voted 4 - 0 - 3 (absent) to grant a one year extension to meet planting requirements at 2304 Poppy Drive. Quadri Sr. Landscape Inspector Dear Mr. Quadri: I have received your letter dated August 19, 1998, copy enclosed, in which you indicate that I have until September 3, 1998 to fulfill my requirements under the tree removal and replacement permit issued to me in August, 1997. As background, I purchased the home in the spring of 1997, and at that time, I noted that the very large pine tree, approximately 5 feet across at the base, appeared to be in poor condition. Accordingly, I had one of your arborists come out and look at the tree and it -- was determined that the tree was diseased. The Parks & Recreation Department issued me a permit to take down the tree, and it was taken down in September, 1997. To date, I have not replaced that tree because of the bad weather during the winter and the fact that I am presently talking to an architect in regards to putting a garage on the back part of my property. The tree, which I removed, was planted approximately 30 years in the exact spot in which a garage was previously located. Since I have no garage, my cars have to sit in the driveway, and I am now looking at having a garage built on the property. Accordingly, at this point in time, I have no idea as to where to place a 24 " box size replacement tree. Depending on where the garage is ultimately placed will affect the placement of the tree. I think it should also be noted that 1 do already have a number of trees in my back yard. I have a very large ash tree in the very back of my house and numerous trees that run along the back fence of my property. A large liquid amber on the side of the house and a number of birch trees in the front of the house. When I mentioned to my neighbor that I would be replacing the large tree with another tree required by the City, they were quite upset to think that I would be putting another tree on my lot seeing as the prior tree was such a nuisance and affected the amount of sun in their backyard. Accordingly, I would like to request, at a minimum, an extension of the permit from the Beautification Commission. I also feel that someone should come out and look at my property to determine, with the construction of a garage, whether I have room to add another "heritage tree". I therefore intend to issue a permit for removal of this tree subject to the provisions of Burlingame Municipal Code Chapter 11.06.090.
