You already have the photograph and can see the damage to my driveway. • Lowered property values due to unsightly or broken driveways. I am hesitant to spend thousands of dollars on a new driveway that I fear will be damaged by roots within a couple years. The driveway poses a safety hazard as well due to the unevenness caused by the root damage. • This tree sheds its leaves, or needles, and most of them fall into our neighbor's yard and gutters and, due to their small size, causes their gutters to get clogged, potentially causing property damage to their house from rain water that can't flow properly away. • We plan to replace the dawn redwood with a new tree, one that doesn't have such spreading roots, but one that provides shade and privacy and enhances our property. Further, a tree that is more neighbor -friendly than the Dawn Redwood. Therefore, please reconsider your decision to deny our permit to remove the tree. We love trees and support the Tree City, USA program in Burlingame, but we do fear that this particular tree will continue to cause damage to both properties if not taken out. We also want to be good neighbors, growing trees that are pleasing to look at but that do not create extra yard work or property concerns for our neighbors. - Thank you, CITY 0 CITE' OF BURLINGAME URLI' GAME PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT 850 Burlingame Avenue, Burlingame, California 94010-2899 "o •J telephone (650) 558-7300 • Parks / Trees (650) 558-7330 9TCRAT•C Fax (650) 696-7216 • E-mail: burlrec@aol.com October 19, 2001 Gary & Mary Blythe 1360 Vancouver Avenue Burlingame, CA 94010 RE: REQUEST FOR REMOVAL OFA DAWN REDWOOD TREE @ 1360 VANCOUVER AVENUE. - BURLINGAME I reviewed your request to remove a Dawn Redwood tree in the front yard at the above address and have made the following determination: 1) The Redwood tree is mature and healthy. -' 2) Sited r o o t damage can be mitigated with root pruning and or installation of root barriers. In his denial of our application Mr. Steven Porter states that the Yew tree in question is a healthy, stable tree, and this indeed is the case. The tree, however, is causing significant crowding of the trees in our yard and is forcing the adjacent magnolia to grow over our neighbor's yard (Heidi Whiteside, 2107 Easton Drive). In addition, roots of the Yew tree are raising the nearby sidewalk and our walkway, perhaps causing a future liability issue. The principle reason, however, that we have requested a permit for the removal of this tree is that it is now significantly interfering with the growth of the immediately adjacent Camperdown Elm. This tree is a Camperdovun elm grafted to the trunk of an American elm with a unique umbrella shape. There are only two other examples of this tree in San Mateo County, which are at Roll Estate in Woodside regularly pointed out by docents. We are sure that this fairly unique tree will be of interest to the Beautification Commission. Enclosed please find pictures of the trees in question. For the reasons detailed above, we sincerely hope the Beautification Commission can support our appeal.
