REPORTS — Staff
1) Donations had been received for two memorial benches to be installed near the
Washington Park Rose Garden; the installation has been completed.
2) Preliminary design was being developed for a small memorial garden and bench in
Washington Park; funds were donated by the family of Jim and Phyllis Whiteside.
3) A bench and plaque, donated by the family of the late Irving Amstrup, would be
dedicated and placed in front of City Hall on Monday, October 18th, at 6:30pm, prior
to the City Council meeting.
4) A Burlingame citizen volunteered to distribute "watering" reminders to residents when
young, City trees are in need of water.
Chairperson Wright —
Chairperson Wright noted that she would not be available for the October 7 h meeting. Commissioner
Benson (Vice Chair) responded that she would chair the October meeting.
Chairperson Wright noted that the plants in the pots fronting the businesses on Broadway look bad and
are an embarrassment to the City. Administrative Secretary Harvey reported that the irrigation (in the
pots) was the responsibility of the City Park crews but that the plants were the responsibility of the
Broadway Business District, and that, the BID had hired Community Gatepath to plant and maintain the
pots.
Commissioner McQuaide
Commissioner McQuaide reported that plans for the Community Garden are moving forward. A site
behind the Bayside Park, Field #2, fence (adjacent to the Dog Park and the bay trail) had been identified
and approved as a possible site and could accommodate approximately 18 5x4' plots. Commissioner
McQuaide also noted that there are at least 8 committed volunteers who are interested in designing the
garden, building the beds, and developing guidelines for the garden.
Commissioner Dittman
Commissioners Dittman commented that she had noticed other cities require 2 trees to be planted when a
large private tree was removed and could that change to the ordinance be considered in the City of
Burlingame? The Commission briefly discussed. Administrative Secretary Harvey clarified that the
current ordinance already requires at least one 24" box size landscape tree, or 3 — 15 gallon size trees, to
be planted for most private protected tree removals, and if the property owner does not want to plant a
tree, they are required to pay $400 into the City's street tree planting fund. There was no further
discussion.
Commissioner Lahey
Commissioner Lahey reported that a business owner had asked when the Broadway street trees would be
trimmed. Administrative Secretary Harvey responded that the Broadway business district trees are
trimmed at the same time to maintain uniformity and that the trees are primarily pruned for safety and
structure, not for signage clearance. Secretary Harvey concluded that she would confirm the trimming
schedule for the Broadway street trees and report back to the Commission at the November meeting.
Commissioner Lahey reported that a branch from a tree is hanging low over the sidewalk on Cabrillo
Avenue and Easton Drive.
Commissioner Benson
Commissioner Benson reported on her recent activities: 1) Planted the window boxes at Big Joe's on "1
Broadway 2) Trimmed and "spruced up" the Burlingame Avenue planters and 3) Planted a new garden
along the sidewalk in front of the Women's Club on Park Road,
Commissioner Benson further reported that the garbage cans on Burlingame Avenue are overflowing far
too often; the DBBA returned her $400 donation that no longer was needed for the adopt -a -planter
program. She stated she would use those monies toward the purchase of plants for the planters, and that,
the Burlingame Hillsborough Garden Club would be planting low maintenance Bergenia in the planter in
front of Sephora on Burlingame Avenue.
Commissioner Carney
Commissioner Carney reported that plantings along the northern end of the sound wall on Rollins Road
had been planted and hoped the northern area near the overpass will be landscaped soon.
Commissioner Carney reported that regretfully she would not be reapplying for the Beautification
Commission and her last meeting would be October 2010 unless more time would be needed to seat
another Commissioner.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:05 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Kar ne Harvey
