Landscape Award 2010 — Committee Update
`— Commissioner McQuaide reported based on review of both nominated sites, Il Fornaio and Sub Zero
Wolfe, the Committee wished to recommend that both businesses receive an award because both met the
criteria, both have done a good job, and both made good use of space. The Commission discussed the
recommendation and the intent for the Business Landscape Award but concluded this year's award should
go to one business and perhaps consider making changes to the Business Landscape Award at a future
meeting.
Following the discussion, Commissioner Carney moved that Sub Zero Wolfe, 1755 Rollins Road, be the
recipient of the 2010 Business Landscape Award, because the landscaping was a great effort,
enhanced the area, and set a precedent for other businesses in the industrial area; seconded, Benson.
Motion carried 4 — 0 — 2 (opposed/Hunt and Wright). The winning business will be notified, the award
presentation will be scheduled for a future Council meeting in September, and publicity will be circulated
with local newspapers and the City's E-News announcing the winning business.

REPORTS - Staff
1) Contract pruning continues on Burlingame Ave. and on Skyline Blvd.
2) Sycamore trees throughout the City are showing severe signs of anthracnose and
powdery mildew caused by the continued wet weather this past spring. The result is
trees have dry brown leaves that drop prematurely. Staff will continue to monitor and
apply liquid fertilizer to simulate new leaf growth.
3) Volunteer George Parker continues his volunteer work of "tidying" the Fragrance
Garden. Several other volunteers have requested to do volunteer work in the
Washington Park Rose Garden: 1) Members of the Burlingame Newcomers Club will
place new ID tags on the roses, 2) Diane McGill, local landscape architect, will ID the
roses, deadhead and remove leaf spot, as well as conduct general "tidying" of the rose
garden.
4) 3 different individuals have donated monies for the placement of 3 benches in
Washington Park: 2 around the rose garden and 1 in the park at the end of Vernon
Way. An additional donation was received for a new garden to be planted in the park
also at the end of Vernon Way.
Chairperson Wright
Reported that she had traveled to Pismo Beach and Visalia; Visalia has lovely planters in the downtown
area with pop up sprinklers and hanging baskets, noting that she came back to Burlingame only to see that
some of the Broadway pots have dead plants. However she noted that the Republic Bank on California
Drive, has planted some nice hedge and ivy near their business, and at the Burlingame Plaza (on
Magnolia Avenue behind the Plaza) a business has planted some flowers in a pot, concluding that some of
the businesses are improving their frontages.
Commissioner Carney
Reported that she saw a woman pulling weeds from around the base of City trees on Oak Grove Avenue.
Commissioner Carney also reported that a chain had been placed on a City tree on the 700 block of --t
Winchester Avenue. Administrative Secretary Harvey stated staff would follow up.
Commissioner McOuaide
Reported that she will be contacting interested individuals to meet and discuss ideas and possibilities of a
community garden. She noted that Supervisor Disco would be able to provide a small area at Bayside
Park for a community garden. Commissioner McQuaide will continue to look for other possible sites in
the City.
Commissioner Benson
Reported that she requested reimbursement of her $400 donation for the defunct adopt -a -planter program,
but to date had not had a response; that the Burlingame Avenue planters look good because of the rainy
weather. She added that the Burlingame Women's Club has agreed to let her use their water and she will
continue to trim the planters on Burlingame Avenue from California Drive to Park Road.
Commissioner Hunt
Reported that she had traveled to Paso Robles and Santa Barbara; Paso Robles has -a wonderful 4 sided,
glassed-bullefin board in the downtown area, and suggested it would be a nice addition to have something
like that in Burlingame's downtown area.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:15pm.
Respectfully submitted,
