HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - BC - 2010.05.06BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION MAY 6, 2010 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Vice Chairperson Benson. ROLL CALL Present: Vice Chairperson Benson, Commissioners Carney, Dittman, Hunt, Lahey and McQuaide Absent: Commissioner Wright Staff: Administrative Secretary Harvey MINUTES — Minutes were approved as submitted. CORRESPONDENCE None PUBLIC COMMENT None OLD BUSINESS Landscape Award 2010 — Committee Update Commissioner McQuaide reported that the committee conducted site visits to the businesses that were nominated and both met the eligibility criteria. Commissioner McQuaide submitted the names of the businesses to the Commission. The Commission will visit the two sites and vote on the winning business at the June 3rd Commission meeting. Grant Tree Monitoring Commissioners submitted the monitoring lists of the grant planted trees. Administrative Secretary Harvey thanked the Commission and stated that staff would conduct follow-up inspections on the trees so noted. REPORTS Administrative Secretary Harvey 1) April tree planting was completed with the planting of 53 street trees. 2) The swing was removed from the City street tree on Columbus Avenue. 3) Contract tree pruning began and would include the trimming of the Eucalyptus trees on Burlingame Avenue and the 1600 block of Skyline Boulevard. 4) The Commission may wish to consider at the June meeting, cancelling the July Commission meeting (due to the July 4th holiday) if there are no appeals or other important business. Secretary Harvey added that a quorum for the August meeting would also need to be determined as part of the consideration. Commissioner Carney Commissioner Carney asked if the Beautification Commission would have a booth at this year's Art -In -Park on June 12th and 13th? Following a brief discussion, the Commission asked that this item be placed on the June 3rd agenda. Commissioner McQuaide commented she would ask the Green Task force about the possibility of sharing a booth space with the Commission. OR REORTS — (Contd.) Commissioner Hunt -� Commissioner Hunt reported that she had attended a recent Downtown Burlingame Business Association meeting, noting that a committee of 30 had formed and is in the process of discussing a merchant assessment district for the maintenance of the planters on Burlingame Avenue. Commissioner Hunt reported that the Rotary Club had built large planters at Community Gatepath on Marco Polo so children in that program could experience planting and caring for vegetables and flowers. Commissioner McQuaide Commissioner McQuaide reported that the ivy is still growing on street trees across from Our Lady of Angels Church. Commissioner McQuaide reported that approximately 19 people are interested in trying to develop a community garden and that she continues to investigate possible sites throughout Burlingame. She noted that Bayside Park would still be a possible consideration but is a "windy" location. Commissioner McQuaide concluded that a community garden interest survey would be made available at the Green Task Force booth at the upcoming Green Faire event. Vice Chairperson Benson Vice Chairperson Benson reported that she would continue to water the plant containers at the Burlingame History museum and noted that she had reported to the Public Works Department the weeds on El Camino Real for weed abatement enforcement.
