`.. The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:30 pm. by Chairperson
Hunt.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Hunt, Commissioners Dittman, Hinkle, and Wright
Absent: Commissioner McQuaide
Staff: Parks Supervisor Disco and Administrative Secretary Harvey
MINUTES Minutes of the October 6, 2011 meeting were approved as submitted.

Burlingame Avenue Streetscape Improvements Project
PUBLIC COMMENT
Chris Cannon, 1304 Bernal Avenue, expressed her concern about the removal of 5 Magnolia trees at 1900
Broadway. Ms. Cannon felt more accountability and transparency is needed when trees are removed in
neighborhoods and that citizens need to know how when trees are scheduled for removal and how to protest
removals.
Parks Supervisor Disco thanked Ms. Cannon for her comments and informed her that if the Commission was in
agreement this item could be placed on the January Commission agenda for public hearing and further discussion.
The Commission agreed to place this item on the January 5, 2012 agenda.
OLD BUSINESS
33rd Annual Arbor Day Celebration — Wednesday, March 7. 2012 a 10:00 am
Park Supervisor Disco noted that the location for the upcoming event had yet to be determined and asked the
Commission to forward any location sites to the Parks office.
NEW BUSINESS
2012 Landscape Award
Commissioners Hinckle and Wright will serve on the 2012 Landscape Award Committee; Commissioner Hinckle
serving as Chair. Applications for nominations will be distributed by the Commission to commercial businesses
and publicity will be submitted to the Chamber of Commerce and local newspapers promoting the award.
Burlingame Avenue Streetscave Improvements Workshop — Update
Parks Supervisor Disco reported that he attending the previous meeting on November 15d' to review 3 different
concepts for the project:
• "Traditional' look
• "Classic' look
• "Contemporary" look
Supervisor Disco noted that the meeting was mostly attended by merchants who preferred the "Traditional' look.
The Commission is encouraged to attend the 2nd Community Workshop on December 8d' to provide initial input.
Supervisor Disco previously provided initial input with regard to tree species and incorporating the development of
channels under the sidewalks for tree roots. Opportunity for plan review and comment will be provided at a future
Commission meeting.
REPORTS — Staff
1) Final reimbursement for the CalFire Tree Inventory Grant has been approved for distribution.
2) Eucalyptus tree on ECR behind 1534/1536 Albemarle will be removed after the first of the year.
3) Application for the trimming of the 3 trees on Ashton has expired and an agreement for the applicant to pay
for the trimming of the trees has not been reached. Therefore, the property owner at 1830 Castenada will
need to reapply.
4) The application submitted by Jennifer Pfaff to the California State Parks Office of Historic preservation for
the Howard -Ralston Eucalyptus Tree Rows to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places will be
on the agenda for nomination at the State Historical Resources Commission meeting of January 20, 2012.
(It is important to note that in the early 1900's the Burlingame Woman's Club played a unique historical
role in making sure the Eucalyptus trees were not removed.)
5) Now that this is a Commission of 5 members, only 2 Commissioners can meet together in Committee and
or to conduct any site inspections, etc.
6) If ever a Commission member recuses themselves from an agenda item, they must leave the room until the
completion of that item.
7) Holiday Tree Lighting event at City Hall will be held on Friday, December 2°a at 5:00 pm.
Chairperson Hunt
Chairperson Hunt reported that she had received a complaint that ivy is growing up the trunks of some trees and she
reported it to the Parks office. Administrative Secretary Harvey noted that a service request had been submitted; the
trees are in the upcoming grid pruning area, and the ivy would be cleared during that time.
Commissioner Dittman
Commissioner Dittman reported that private trees approved for removal at 2200 Poppy Drive were removed prior to
the effective date of the permit. Commissioner Dittman asked when the street tree would be planted on the 1800
block of Easton Drive. Park Supervisor Disco responded that it would be planted within the next month.
There being no finther business, the meeting adjourned at 7:25 pm.
