The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chairperson
McQuaide.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson McQuaide, Carney, Hinkle, Hunt, and Lahey
Absent: Commissioners Dittman and Wright
Staff: Supervisor Disco, Administrative Secretary Harvey
MINUTES Minutes of the March 5, 2011 meeting were approved as submitted.
PUBLIC COMMENT
There were no public comments.
OLD BUSINESS
Landscape Award 2011— (Commissioners Dit mn, Hunt, and Lahey)
Administrative Secretary Harvey noted that due to her absents at this meeting, Commissioner Dittman asked that
items a) and b) be held over for discussion at the May 5, 2011 meeting. Commission agreed to hold over item a)
Award Recipient Eligibility Status and b) Review of Landscape Award Timeline/Schedule.
c) Report on Nominations Received —
Commicsioner Lahey reported that 6 nomination forms had been received and that the Committee will review and
screen the nominations to see that the businesses meeting the qualifying criteria. The Committee will report back to
the May meeting.
JOINT BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION/COUNCIL MEETING/CONSENSUS ITEMS) FOR AGENDA
The Commission identified several consensus items to be discussed with the Council. Commissioners Hinkle and
McQuaide reported they would not be able to attend because of work related/personal obligations.
NEW BUSINESS
Review of Beautification Commission Meetine "Start Time"
Commissioner Lahey asked that this item be placed on the agenda, so the Commission can reinvestigate and discuss
the will of the commission to adjust the meeting start time to 6:30 pm. Commissioner Lahey noted having the
meeting at 6:00 pm may be too hard for some members on the Commission or members of the public; staring she
often arrives late due to travel time from work. Commissioner Lahey also noted that this is the only City meeting
that begins before 7:00 pm and wondered if this might be why the Commission had few applicants to fill the
vacating positions.
Chairperson McQuaide disagreed, stating that the Commission already adjusted their meeting time from 5:30 pm to
6:00 pm; that she has a commitment at 7:00 pm on some Thursday evenings throughout the year and stated she
believed the 6:00 pm start time was late enough for the public but also allows for people to get home for
dinnedfacnily.
Following a brief discussion, it was the consensus of the Commission that item be carried over to the May 5 h
meeting, when the full Commission could be present to make a decision on this item.
REPORTS
There was nothing for Staff to report.
Commissioner McQuaide
Chairperson McQuaide asked if the Commission would be planning to have a booth at Art -In -The -Park. It was the
consensus of the Commission to place this item on the May 5 b Agenda.

Commissioner Labev '1
Commissioner I ahey asked Supervisor Disco the status of the replacement tree at 1812 Easton Drive. Supervisor
Disco noted that the tree crew attempted to plant a Eucalyptus citriodora but the homeowner insisted they leave and
not plant the tree; the item has been referred to the City Attorney as to how to proceed.
Commissioner Hinckle
Commissioner Hinckle stated she went to the Arbor Day ceremony and had a fabulous time; 5 elementary schools
participated and the children made presentations. Commissioner Hinckle stated she went to each group and
reminded the children that the tree they were planting would be enjoyed by future generations.
Commissioner Carney
Commissioner Carney noted that P.G.&E. had trimmed the Sycamore trees on Winchester Drive, but had not
removed dead branches and many small branches came down in the storm. Supervisor Disco responded that
P.G.&E. only trims the trees to clear the primary wires. He added that Sycamore trees are notorious for loosing
small twigs or branches during wind storms and this occurrence was experienced throughout the City during the last
wind storm -
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:00 pm.
