ROLL CALL Present: Chairperson McQuaide, Carney, Dittman, Hinckle, Hunt, and Lahey Absent: Commissioner Wright Staff: Supervisor Disco, Administrative Secretary Harvey, and Office Assistant Borba MINUTES Minutes of the February 3, 2011 meeting were approved as submitted. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments. OLD BUSINESS Landscape Award 2011— Committee Report on Publicity/Distribution Process Committee Chair Dittman confirmed that the Commission had been handing out forms to local businesses. Administrative Secretary Harvey noted that one nomination had been received at the Park office, thus far. Following a brief discussion, Committee Chair Dittman asked that the timeline used for the Landscape Award be reviewed at the next Commission meeting. Arbor Day Ceremony — Ray Park — Monday, March 7, 2011 610:00 AM Supervisor Disco reported that this year's 32° Arbor Day ceremony would be at Ray Park and that 5 Elm trees would be planted to replace 2 Pine trees that needed to be removed. Administrative Secretary Harvey reported that �-' 5 of the local elementary schools had responded and would be sending representative(s), and that CALFIRE representative Jimi Scheid would be attending and presenting the 32nd Tree City USA award to Mayor Nagel. COMMISSIONERS DINNER — FRIDAY, MARCH 11`h Chairperson McQuaide confirmed which Commissioners would be attending the dinner. The Commission identified several ideas to be considered)6 for discussion with the Council and would confirm by consensus, items to be placed on the joint meeting agenda. REPORTS — Staff 1) Admin. Secretary Harvey reported that Commissioner Carney has agreed to remain on the Commission because no applications had been received to fill the vacating position. 2) The final phase of the grant tree planting included the planting of 31Red Maples and 17 Scarlet Oaks on Rollins Road (north of Broadway), and 33 Elm trees on El Camino Real to be planted on Arbor Day, March 7`" . The Elm trees replace approximately 11 Eucalyptus and Elm removals conducted by CalTrans over the last 2-3 years. Project is funded through a grant from CALFIRE, including matching funds from the City of Burlingame. In addition to the 200-300 trees planted each year by the City, an additional 450+ trees were able to be planted in "vacant planting sites" throughout the City with the use of the grant funds. 3) Washington Park rose garden has been expanded to include 40 new rose bushes. 4) All playground sandboxes have been raked, cleaned, and new sand has been added. 5) Yearly field prep has been completed on all ballfrelds throughout the City. 6) Tree trimming on Broadway has been completed. `-- 7) Contract tree pruning has been completed on Oak Grove and at Bayside Park. 8) Vernon Garden has been completed through donations from the Whiteside family. REPORTS — (Contd.) Commissioner McOuaide Chairperson McQuaide stated she had already received donations toward the Community Garden; that she is working with 10 dedicated people who are very excited about the garden. The location of the Community Garden would be located in the parking lot of Murray Field at Bayside Park, and would provide enough space for up to 30-40 beds, including a compost pile, a shed, and benches. Commissioner Hunt Commissioner Hunt stated employees from Davey Resource were in her neighborhood conducting the new inventory on the City's street trees. Commissioner Dittman Commissioner Dittman reported that she noticed a tree had not yet been planted at the 1812 Easton Drive address where the large Monterey Cypress had been removed by appeal to the Commission. Administrative Secretary Harvey stated she would review the Commission minutes from the hearing and report back to the Commission at the next meeting. Commissioner Lahey Commissioner Lahey asked that the starting time of the monthly Commission meetings be placed on next month's agenda for discussion and reconsideration. Commissioner Carney Commissioner Carney stated she is happy to remain on the Commission and would participate as she can, considering some minor health concerns. Commissioner Carney then reported that P.G.&E. "topped" and "ruined" the City tree in front of 727 Winchester Drive.
