ROLL CALL Present: Chairperson Hunt, Commissioners Dittman, Hinkle, Kirchner, and McQuaide Staff: Parks & Recreation Director Glomstad, Parks Supervisor/Arborist Disco, and Office Assistant II Gina Borba MINUTES Minutes of the March 1, 2012 meeting were approved as submitted. CORRESPONDENCE - Letter from Jennifer Pfaff regarding the approval of Burlingame's El Camino Tree's being placed on the National Register of Historical Places. Letter from Commissioner Kirchner regarding recommendations for renaming the Beautification Commission. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments. OLD BUSINESS 2012 Landscape Award Commissioner Hinkle reported that there were no nominations submitted by the deadline of 4/1/12 for the 2012 Landscape Award. Commissioner Hinkle suggested that information on the Landscape Award be included in the Business License Billing that is sent out in June; Director Glomstad said she would look into it. It was decided by the Commissioners to extend the deadline for the Landscape Award to May 1", 2012. The Commissioners will submit nominations from the areas they were assigned to Administrative Secretary Harvey by April 26t', 2012. In May they will review the applications and vote in June. Administrative Secretary Harvey will extend the deadline date on Burlingame a -news. The Commission will review and update the timeline and rules of the Landscape Award on a future agenda. Publicizing Tree Policies in the City of Burlingame Commissioner Hunt stated that in the past she provided the brochures "Trees —What's the Big Beal?" to the San Mateo County Association of Realtors and the Newcomers Club, and has agreed to provide the brochures again. The brochures were developed by former Superintendent Greg Foell and the Beautification Commission to inform Burlingame residents about the trees in the City. NEW BUSLNESS None REPORTS — Staff 1) The City Council approved changes to the existing Leaf Blower ordinance to restrict/modify leaf blower use throughout the City. Changes will impact some maintenance schedules for Parks and Playgrounds. Notification of the changes in the ordinance will be published in the a -news and in the water bills. Information regarding the changes to the ordinance can be obtained from the City Clerk's office at City Hall. 2) Ivy vines will be severed at breast height around the trunk and the Tree Crew will remove the dead ivy when they move through a grid pruning area. 3) On April 16'' Jennifer Pfaff will make a presentation before Council regarding the Howard /Ralston Tree Rows on El Camino Real placement on the National Registry of Historic Places. 4) A small shade structure and several small picnic tables will be installed at Cuernavaca Park and should be completed by the end of April. 5) The Tree Crew has completed Sycamore pruning in the Hillside Area and will move on to the section North of Broadway. 6) Approximately 40 street trees will be planted during the April planting. 7) The Tree Pruning Contractor has completed the trimming of the Eucalyptus trees in the SP parking lot, just north of the Royal Donut Shop. 8) Appeals to the approval to removal of 2 redwood trees on a private property will be heard at the June 7, 2012 Beautification Commission meeting. Commissioner Dittman Commissioner Dittman stated that 2 trees were planted at 2300 Poppy Drive. Commissioner Dittman then asked when the median strip on El Camino Real in front of Peninsula Hospital would be planted. Arborist Disco reported that the plans have been developed and Public Works is waiting on Caltrans for approval. Commissioner Kirchner Commissioner Kirchner shared with the Commission a list of possible commission/committee names from other agencies from San Francisco to Mountain View. The Commission now has a list of recommendations to choose from if Council should decide to rename the Beautification Commission. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:15 pm.
