HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - BC - 2012.05.03BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION May 3, 2012 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:30 pm. by Chairperson Hunt. ROLL CALL Present: Chairperson Hunt, Commissioners Hinckle, Kirchner, and McQuaide Absent: Commissioner Dittman Staff: Parks & Recreation Director Glomstad and Administrative Secretary Harvey MINUTES Minutes of the April 5, 2012 meeting were approved as submitted. CORRESPONDENCE There was no correspondence. PUBLIC COMMENT There were no public comments. OLD BUSINESS 2012 Landscape Award Status Administrative Secretary Harvey reviewed with the Commission the list of nominees submitted by the deadline. The Commissioners will visit each site and the winning business will be selected at the June 7, 2012 meeting. Secretary Harvey noted that she will need nomination forms for each of the businesses that were nominated and the review of the landscape award timeline, publicity, and the rules and standards will be placed on the August agenda for further review. Parks & Recreation Director Glomstad submitted a draft of the Business Landscape Award publicity and reported she has made arrangements for the publicity to be mailed along with the water bills in July and in August. Director Glomstad asked that any recommended changes or revisions to the publicity piece be submitted to staff by the June 7th meeting. NEW BUSINESS None REPORTS — Staff I ) Installation of a shade structure and several picnic tables has been completed by the landscape and maintenance crews. . 2) A donation was received from a local resident for a park bench in Washington Park. The landscape crew has completed the installation of the bench in between the Rec Center and the children's playground. 3) Renovation/resurfacing of the Laguna Tennis Courts will begin the middle of May and is scheduled to be completed by June 1" 4) The hearing for the appeals of the approval to remove 2 redwood trees on a private property has been changed and rescheduled for the June 71h Beautification Commission meeting. The Commission will receive related information with the agenda the week of May 27th. The Commission is encouraged to review all related information and begin conducting site visits beginning May 3151. 5) Consider cancellation of the July 51h meeting due to the July 41h holiday and if there is little or no business. Commissioner McQuaide Commissioner McQuaide stated that Parks & Recreation Director Glomstad has identified a maintenance yard that is not currently used at Bayside Park as a possible site for the Community Garden. The site is near the Dog Park. She added that the Council was very supportive at the Budget Study session and that she is looking forward to working with Director Glomstad to move forward on this project that started 2 years ago. Commissioner Kirchner Commissioner Kirchner asked if the Council had any other comments or had given any more direction with regard to the name change or change of scope for the Beautification Commission. Director Glomstad responded that the Council removed those items from consideration during the goals setting session. Commissioner Kirchner noted that many of his neighbors are unaware of the City's tree ordinances or programs and suggested that high school students could receive credit going door to door throughout the community to get the word out.
