The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:30 pm. by Chairperson
Hunt.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Hunt, Commissioners Dittman, Hinckle, Kirchner, and McQuaide

MINUTES - Minutes of the June 7, 2012 meeting were approved as submitted.
CORRESPONDENCE
Correspondence to related property owners regarding the Commission's approval of the removal of 2 Private
Redwood trees at 1433 Cortez Ave.
Correspondence to Carr, McClellan, Ingersoll, Thompson & Horn congratulating their business as the recipients of
the 2012 Business Landscape Award.
Correspondence to eligible nominees of the 2012 Business Landscape Award, commending the businesses for their
efforts in providing pleasing frontages to their place of business.
Letter of Appeal to Council from property owner at 1432 Cabrillo Ave. regarding the Commission's approval of the
removal of 2 Private Redwood trees at 1433 Cortez Ave.

There were no public comments.
OLD BUSINESS
2012 Landscape Award Presentation — September 171h City Council Meeting
Administrative Secretary Harvey reported that the plaque had been completed and artist Dale Perkins was working
on the art rendering. She also reported that the 2013 award application would be mailed to all Burlingame
businesses along with the annual business licensing mailing, the end of August and the application would include
information about 2012 Award Presentation to Carr, McClellan, Ingersoll, Thompson, and Hom; other publicity
would appear in the City of Burlingame ENEWS and in the Fall and Winter Recreation Brochure.
The Commission briefly discussed other forms of media to promote the award; individual acknowledgments; and
community interest with regard to the Landscape Award. Following the discussion, Commissioner Hinckle agreed
to contact the Daily Journal and Commissioner McQuaide would contact the Burlingame Patch regarding
submitting articles. The Commission then requested that the item: Future of the Landscape Award, be placed on
the September agenda for further discussion.
REPORTS — Staff
1) After an extensive interview process, the Parks Division hired a new Landscape Leadworker. James
Delaney, who has been with the City for 13 years, is an excellent, hardworking employee, and will be the
new Leadworker for Washington Park and the East Side which consists of the areas surounding and
including Bayside Park and Murray Field; 2 more positions remain to be filled: 1 Park Maintenance
Worker and 1 Tree Maintenance Worker. Positions will be filled in the next several months.
2) 6 — 24" box size trees were planted by the property owner at 1272 Cabrillo Avenue as replacement for
private trees that were illegally removed in December of 2011.
3) The appellant (regarding the removal of 2 private Redwood trees at 1433 Cabrillo Avenue) has appealed to
Council; the hearing has been set for Tuesday, September 0.
4) 3 Commission Terms will be expiring in October: Commissioners Dittman, Hunt, and McQuaide. Sitting
Commissioners can reapply after announcement of open positions are posted by the City Manager's office.
REPORTS —Staff (Contd.)
5) Laguna Tennis Court Paving has been completed. The Tennis Court Fence will soon be removed and
replaced.
6) The Landscape Maintenance Crew completed their annual trimming of California Drive.
7) The Tree Crew continues the watering of new Elms on ECR on a weekly basis.
Commissioner Hunt
Commissioner Hunt reported that copies of Trees, What's the Big Deal" brochure were mailed to 37 more
Burlingame/Hillsborough newcomers to the area. She then asked if street sweeping and weed abatement is still
provided by the City. Secretary Harvey responded that street sweeping is provided through the Public Works
Department and believed the Weed Abatement program was under the jurisdiction of Central County Fire, and she
would forward the appropriate contact numbers to the commission.
Commissioner Dittman
Commissioner Dittman reported that young trees on the corner of Farringdon Lane and Oak Grove Avenue are in
need of water. Secretary Harvey noted that although property owners are asked to water the trees at least 5 gallons
of water weekly during the dry seasons, the tree crew waters the young trees as time permits; she would report the
address to the City Arborist.
Commissioner Kirchner
Commissioner Kirchner reported that two young trees in the planter strip had been removed on the corner of
Adeline Drive and Bernal Avenue. Secretary Harvey responded that the tree crew is currently conducting tree
removals for the October planting, but that she would review the removal/replacement list to confirm that the trees
were removed by City crews and are scheduled for replacement.
