November 1, 2012
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:30 pm. by
Chairperson Hunt.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Hunt, Commissioners Dittman, Hinckle, Kirchner, and McQuaide
Staff: Parks & Recreation Director Glomstad, Parks Supervisor/City Arborist Disco, Admin.
Secretary Harvey, and Parks & Recreation Secretary, Borba.
MINUTES - Minutes of the October 4, 2012 meeting were approved as submitted.
None

None
OLD BUSINESS
Future of Business Landscape Award — (Discussion)
Commission discussed whether to continue or discontinue the Business Landscape Award. Items
discussed were community and business interest, award elements, and nomination components. It was a
consensus of the Commission that the Business Landscape Award be continued noting: 1) Nominations
can include large and small businesses in Commercial and Retail areas of Burlingame; 2) Anyone,
including Commissioners can nominate a business; and 3) A business can only be awarded once per
owner of the business. 4) Publicizing the award will be placed in the Business License Water Bill, the
Chamber of Commerce Newsletter, the Parks & Recreation Brochures, and the online City ENews.
The Commission then asked that business incentives for landscape improvements be included on the next
agenda for further discussion.
NEW BUSINESS
Commission Chair Rotation for December 2012 Meeting
Admin. Secretary Harvey reported that presuming Council would be reappointing those Commissioners
with expired terms the following Commission positions would rotate at the December 6`h meeting:
• Chair — Commissioner Karen Dittman
• Vice — Commissioner Anne Hinckle
• Secretary — Commissioner Richard Kirchner
Business Landscape Award Committee Appointment
Admin. Secretary Harvey reported that the following Commission positions would be appointed at the
December 6`h meeting to serve on the Committee:
• Chair — Richard Kirchener
• Committee Member — Leslie McQuaide
Arbor Day, Thursday March 7, 2013 — (Location to be Determined)
Parks Supervisor Disco reported that the event site had not yet been decided, but that a decision would be
made within the next month or two in time to publicize the event and invite the schools and the
community.
REPORTS
Parks Supervisor/City Arborist Disco
• Planting of 116 trees will be completed before Thanksgiving; next planting is
scheduled for January 2013.
• Horseshow Pits in Washington Park have been completed and are open for use.
• The new Bocce Ball Courts should be completed within the next several months.
• Commissioner Training Workshop has been scheduled for April 20`h and would be held
in Foster City. More information to follow.
• 18 Liquidambars that are causing significant damage to City sidewalks would be
removed by the Public Works Department as part of the 50/50 sidewalk replacement
program. The trees would be replaced during the January street tree planting.
• CalTrans has scheduled removal of dead Elms on El Camino during the month
November. CalTrans would also schedule the replacement planting with Accolade
Elms for this winter.
• The Council would be reviewing revised plans for the Burlingame Avenue Streetscape
which now includes the planting of two tree species, Zeikovas and Gingkos at the
November 5`' Council meeting.
• The Council would also be reviewing and discussing appointments to the
Beautification Commission at the November 5'h Council meeting.
Commissioner Hunt
Commissioner Hunt noted that she was in attendance at the City Council meeting during the Burlingame
Avenue Streetscape discussion, reporting that the Council felt the Commission's letter had some good
suggestions with regard to tree selections for the project.
Commissioner Hunt reported that City tree limbs are blocking the "Stop" sign at Oak Grove and
Winchester. Admin. Secretary Harvey reminded the Commission to feel free to report these or any other
related occurrences to the Parks office at 650.558.7330 so they may be addressed by staff in a timely --�
manner.
Commissioner Dittman
Commissioner Dittman apologized for inadvertently missing last months meeting and that she had noticed
newly planted trees between Easton Drive and Hillside Drive. Admin. Secretary Harvey confirmed that
the tree plantings in that area were part of the October tree planting.
Commissioner Dittman then reported that during her Commission interview with the City Council, the
Council asked that the Beautification Commission place Public Art on an upcoming agenda. It was a
consensus of the Commission that the item would be placed on the December 6`' agenda.
Commissioner Kirchner
Commissioner Kirchner reported that he had noticed that the permitted removal two private Redwood
trees at 1433 Cortez Avenue was nearing completion.
Commissioner McQuaide
Commissioner McQuaide reported that the proposal for a 23 plot Community Garden at Victoria Park had
been approved by the Parks and Recreation Commission and had been forwarded to the Council for
review and consideration at the November 5`h Council meeting.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:20 pm.
