The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:33 pm by Chairperson
�- Dittman.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Dittman, Commissioners Hunt, Hinkle and Kirchner
Absent: Commissioner McQuaide
Staff: Parks & Recreation Director Glomstad, Parks Supervisor/City Arborist Disco, Admin. Secretary
Harvey, and Parks & Recreation Secretary, Borba.
MINUTES - Minutes of the November 1, 2012 meeting were approved as submitted.
CORRESPONDENCE
Beautification Commission Committee Chair and Landscape Committee Rotation schedule.
The following Commissioner Rotation:
• Chair — Karen Dittman
• Vice Chair — Anne Hinkle
• Secretary — Richard Kirchner
The following Landscape Committee positions were appointed:
• Chair — Richard Kirchner
• Committee Member — Leslie McQuaide
Councilman Deal sent three letters congratulating Chair Dittman and Commissioners McQuaide and Hunt on their
reappointments to the Beautification Commission.
PUBLIC COMMENT

OLD BUSINESS
Arbor Day, Thursday March 7.2013 — (Location to be Determined)
Parks Supervisor Disco reported that the event site had not yet been decided, but that a decision would be made
within the next month in time to publicize the event and invite the schools and the community.
NEW BUSINESS
Business Incentives for Landscape Improvements
Commissioner Hinkle recommended exploring possible ways to encourage business' to improve there store front
appearance and landscape. Commissioner Dittman suggested a script to approach business owners to help them
improve their landscaping. Commissioners Kirchner and McQuaide will present a draft at the February meeting.
Public Art
Supervisor Disco reminded Commission of Commissioner Dittman's conversation with City Council during her
interview regarding Beautification Commission's possible roll in Public Art. Director Glomstad believes that the
Commission's roll in public art could fall under the Beautification Commission Ordinance 3.28.050(b).
Recommend, develop, sponsor, and implement programs and activities to promote community awareness and
participation in city beautification. Administrative Secretary Harvey stated there is an "Art in Public Places
Policy" already established. This policy will be distributed to each Commissioner for review and discussion at the
February meeting. The Commission suggested inviting Leona Moriarty of the Burlingame Art Society to attend the
February meeting to discuss possible ideas and suggestions. Commissioner Hinkle motioned to continue to explore
`.. the Commissions involvement in Public Art. Commissioner Kirchner seconded the motion. Motion carried: 4 in
favor, 1 absent/McQuaide.
REPORTS
Parks Supervisor/City Arborist Disco
• Fall tree planting is nearing completion with 114 trees being planted by tree and landscape crews;
next planting is scheduled for January 2013.
• Last weeks storm caused minimal damage. Two trees were up rooted and multiple limbs were
picked up by parks crews. Most significant damage was from a fallen liquidambar limb that
dented 4 cars.
• Public works has begun their 50/50 sidewalk program in the Ray Park area Fifteen liquidambar
trees are scheduled for removal and replacement as part of the sidewalk mitigation.
Commissioner Hunt
Commissioner Hunt noted that City Hall needs a new flag.
Commissioner Dittman
Commissioner Dittman was concerned about the removal of trees on Vancouver. Arborists Disco explained it was
part of the 50/50 sidewalk repair program.
Commissioner Dittman was sorry to hear it was Admin. Secretary Harvey's last meeting and was sorry to see her
go.
Commissioner Kirchner
Commissioner Kirchner requested a timeline for the Landscape award and a list of past Landscape award winners.
Commissioner Hinkle
None
The January 3, 2013 meeting was cancelled. The next Beautification Commission meeting is February 7, 2013.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:22 pm.
