HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - LB - 2019.04.161 Burlingame Library Approved Board of Trustees Minutes April 16, 2019 I.Roll Call Trustees Present: Kerbey Altmann, Andy Blanco, Mike Nagler, Lisa Rosenthal Trustee Absent: Randi Murray Staff Present: Sidney Poland, Recorder Brad McCulley, City Librarian Kathy Von Mayrhauser Children’s Services Manager II.Amendment to the April Agenda The Trustees approved a motion to amend the agenda to include funding of additional signage to the donor wall under Action Items for discussion and approval. M/S/C (Rosenthal/Altmann) III.Library Board of Trustees Minutes The Trustees unanimously approved the minutes of the March 19, 2019 Trustee Board meeting. M/S/C (Rosenthal/Nagler) IV.From the Floor (Public Comments) There were not any representatives from the public who attended the Trustee meeting. V.Statistics March statistics showed an increase in E-Media and a steady increase in use of the Tech Lab. Elaine Tai’s Book to Action display of large posters entitled “Wherever there’s a Fight” is a special attraction for patrons. Repair Café continues to be popular with patrons. Attendance at that recent event was 59 with 41 items repaired. VI.Reports A.City Librarian’s Report - Highlights Library Administration will begin a recruitment for a Volunteer Coordinator this month. The library will host Aileen Cassinette, the Poet Laureate of San Mateo, for a “Concert and Poetry Event” on Saturday April 27th at 2:00pm. Peninsula Library System has voted to increase the consortium Overdrive budget from $400,000 to $458,000 for 2019-2020. B.Foundation Report The Foundation’s April book sale raised $5,300. Sarah Simpson has joined the Foundation Board of Directors. 2 C. Speaker’s Series On June 7th, the “Speaker’s Series will partner with the non-profit organization Jazz At The Ballroom to host a musical fund raising event at the Library.  VIP tickets are $95.00; General Admission tickets are $35.00.  The Foundation will host a reception for VIP donors before the event at 5:00. Event begins at 6:00.  The Trustees passed a motion stating that the Trustees would allocate $875.00 to purchase 25 General Admission tickets for the June 7th Speakers Series event to be given to patrons at the discretion of the City Librarian. M/S/C (Nagler/Rosenthal) D. Trustee Account – The Trustees reviewed the expenditures for the month of February 2019. E. Monthly Topic - Kathy Von Mayrhauser – Children’s Services Manager Kathy presented a detailed report to the Trustees regarding the activities, programs and services that occur yearly in the Children’s Department. Here are some highlights.  Children’s Staff – Kim Day, Kelly Mackewicz and Jenny Miner are the full-time librarians. On-call librarians help with desk shifts when necessary.  Children’s circulation makes up 53% of the total circulation for the library. In the fiscal year July 2017-June 2018 total circulation for the main library and Easton was 636,974.  There are 6 story times a week for a total of 229 toddlers, preschool and baby story times in the fiscal year July 2017- June 2018. Attendance for all story times was 15,393.  237 special event programs were held for preschool, elementary and teens with a combined attendance of 18,869.  Children’s staff also visits Hillsborough and Burlingame elementary and middle schools, as well as Burlingame High to promote special programs such as Poetry Month and Summer Reading.  In January of this year a Homework Center has been provided for grades 1-6 in the Tech Lab. A paid employee assists students with their assignments. The program will conclude in May.  Since Easton does not have air conditioning, the closing threshold for closing on extremely hot days will be 83 degrees.  VII. Unfinished Business A. Lane Room Upgrade – Tabled until the May 21st Trustee Meeting. B. Window Shade Quote The Trustees passed the motion of Trustee Rosenthal to allocate the sum of $25,102.70 from the Roger and Jean Hunt Duncan Fund to purchase new shades for the Children’s, AV and Teen Rooms. M/S/C (Rosenthal/Nagler) 3 VIII.New Business A.Budget for Fiscal Year- 2019-2020 Brad reviewed the library budget for the next fiscal year and stated that it has to be approved by the City Council. B.Census 2020 State funding for libraries is based on the census so an accurate count of the population is very significant. Librarians are trying to find ways for their libraries to help promote a successful census. Brad noted that the Library Foundation and the Trustees can provide important assistance in this effort. C.Donor Wall Addition The current donor wall was paid for by the Trustees at the time of the 2013-2015 library remodel. There have been inquiries about the possibility of increasing the size of the donor wall in order to add more donor plaques. VKK Signmakers Inc. submitted an estimate to add another row to the top of the current donor wall. The estimate also included replacement of the letter “O” that has been missing from the Lane Community Room Signage. The Trustees passed a motion to allocate the sum of $955.22 to VKK Signmakers, Inc. for a new row of donor plaques to be added to the current donor wall, and to replace the letter “O” that has been missing from the Lane Room Signage.
