V. Reports
A. City Librarian's Report
Personnel Update
• Loma O'Neill will join the Circulation Department as a
Library Assistant.
• Library staff attended the annual PLP Future of Libraries
event at the SFPL main library on Oct. 3rd. Cynthia noted
some of the topics presented to attendees were "Do we need
to get away from tech in early literacy education and are VR
and AR really the future for libraries?".
B. Foundation Report
The Foundation raised approximately $6,000 at their October
book sale. Increased publicity and constant re -stocking of items
helped sales.
VI. Monthly Report - Cynthia Rider - Adult Services
Cynthia gave the Trustees an overview of how adult programming
functions.
Staff decided to adopt a theme for their programs every 6 months.
The current theme is "Get Healthy at the Library".
One of the ideas is to have fewer programs with a wider variety of
subject matter and hopefully increase attendance. For example,
both the Drag Queen and pickling programs were attended by an
entirely new audience.
The First Friday art shows, overseen by Elaine Tai, have been
very successful with attendance at most shows in the 100 people
range. It has been decided to discontinue the art shows in the
winter partially due to the possibility of inclement weather.
The program theme for January is "Connecting with Your
Community".
Cynthia emphasized that one of her program goals is to support
new authors at the library and give them the opportunity to
promote their books by giving book talks.
VII. Unfinished Business
Speaker's Series
Trustee Murray reported that the event held on Saturday, October 6tn
featuring Patricia Arquette, Academy Award Winning Actor and Activist,
and Congresswoman Jackie Speier was thoroughly enjoyed by all who
attended. Randi noted that Jackie Speier has written a new book
entitled "Undaunted" that will be available to the public in the near
future. The date for the next speaker's series has not been determined.
VIII. New Business
A. Staff Gift Cards for Library Cafe
Trustee Nagler suggested giving $5.00 gift cards for the Fika Cafe to
staff for anniversary recognition or other special occasions. Funding
would come from one of the Trustee funds. This item will be on the
November agenda.
B. Gavin Jones/Duvateen Sound Invoice
The Trustees unanimously passed a motion to fund the sound
system used for the Speaker's Series provided by Gavin
Jones/Duvateen Sound in the amount of $1,700. M/S/C
(Rosenthal/Nagler)
IX. ANNOUNCEMENTS
Cancellation of December Meeting will be placed on the November
agenda.
Staff Recognition event will be placed on the November agenda

EDELWEISS REVIEWS
Des Moines Public Library, IA
Kathy Leonard
Collection Development Manager
LENGTH OF USAGE: 1.5-2 years
USES
• Weeding lists TS uses it most, weeding used most
• CDV: category performance comparison, genres collections checking out well at different
branches, where understocked, more room for good performers
• Collection analysis, branch reports for top titles, multiple copies to 1 copy when to do this
• ISBN for print runs, marketing/publicity planned for titles will help w/ ordering, e.g. 75k copies
and publicity plans for them then by more for an unknown
• Subject searching
• Publicity plans, covers before vendors
• Daily data dumb
USED COLLECTION HQ BEFORE
Edelweiss is cheaper than Collection HQ. CHQ didn't have the great marketing plans or print runs that
you can get from edelweiss. Collection dev in Edelweiss is much better
BENEFITS
• Great customer service, very good about resolutions and follow-up
• Training is good, help pages
DRAWBACKS
• In general really happy, few little glitches, really good when something isn't working. Support is
terrific. Training is good. Glitches, how our system works w/ our system. They use Horizon. "Last
Activity" our system doesn't record it the way they define it. They fixed it.

Library Director
How long have you had Edelweiss?
Moreno Valley Public Library has used Edelweiss for 2 years.
What do you use it for?
Moreno Valley Public Library staff uses Edelweiss for reviewing large collections with low circulation and
reviewing small collections with high circulation.
Who on your staff uses it?
Moreno Valley Public Library Leadership Team members utilize Edelweiss. Key staff members that utilize
Edelweiss include the Adult Services Librarian, Circulation Supervisor, Library Director, Mall Branch
Supervisor, and Youth Services Librarian.
Can you list a couple of pros and cons?
Pros for Edelweiss is a nonjudgmental way for staff to objectively weed collections, purchase new
materials for library collections, and review collections of local libraries in comparison to your library
system. Cons for Edelweiss are not being able to factor collection development budgets and the
frequency of purchasing new materials in usage results.
Jackson County Library
Wendy Glimpse
Collection Development Librarian
How long have you had Edelweiss?
Since June 2018
What do you use it for?
• Withdrawing
• Titles that need to buy that other libraries are, selection
• Stale titles for big weeding
Who on your staff uses it?
• Just Wendy, CDV librarian
Can you list a couple of pros and cons?
• Pros: Interface is easy to use
• Cons: Duplicated titles, e.g. some teen titles appear in both "YA SciFi" and "YA Misc" — but this could
be a training issue or a cataloging issue. Also withdrawn items don't get removed right away.
Anything else?
It has amazing tools, but I don't understand all of it — possibly because I was never properly trained.
Duplicates are an issue. One item is represented in multiple places. Withdrawn items don't get removed
right away. Would be helpful if didn't have that issue.
