RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BURLINGAME AGREEING TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN
THE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT LEAD BY THE FIVE BAY AREA
REGIONAL AGENCIES TO ARRIVE AT A COMPACT FOR A
SUSTAINABLE BAY AREA
WHEREAS, the City of Burlingame recognizes that it is a part of the economy, environmental
resources, cultural amenities, educational institutions, and the diversity of the population which make the
Bay Area region a unique and special place; and
WHEREAS, the common problems of traffic congestion, long commutes, overburdened transit
systems, lack of sufficient housing, escalating housing costs, loss of open space, changing neighborhoods, air
and water pollution and uneven distribution of the benefits of the regional economy are regionally shared
problems which require communities to join together to reach effective solutions; and
WHEREAS, the Draft Compact of a Sustainable Bay Area proposed by the Bay Area Alliance for
Sustainable Development, a multi -stakeholder coalition, has been presented to the Burlingame City Council
at their meeting on June 4, 2001 and the City Council of the City of Burlingame has reviewed the Draft
"Compact" and ten commitments to action; and
WHEREAS, this "Compact" focuses on the region's ability "to meet the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of fixture generations to meet their own needs" and to reach consensus
among organizations and civic leaders within the region on a new local vision for growth which is rooted in
a consensus on values about how the region should grow; and
WHEREAS, the City of Burlingame is currently involved in significant planning programs which
will provide the City Council, other local decision makers and residents with a better understanding of
regional issues, community interdependence, and the roots of our local and regional values.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Burlingame City Council will review the Final
Compact for a Sustainable Bay Area and the ten commitments which represent its action program in greater
depth in the near term as we undertake our future planning initiatives and that the City Council of the City of
Burlingame agrees to participate in the civic engagement required to finalize the Compact for a Sustainable
Bay Area and address our commonly shared regional issues and their solutions.

and correct copy of a resolution duly passed and adopted by the City Council of the city of Burlingame at a
regular meeting thereof held on the 18t` day of June, 2001, by the following vote of the members thereof:
