FINAL Minutes June 1, 2017
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:34 pm by
Chair Hunt.
ROLL CALL
Present: Commissioners Hunt, Hinckle, Kearney and Kirchner
Absent: None
Staff: Parks and Recreation Director Glomstad and Parks Superintendent/City Arborist Disco
Others: Qiva Dinuri, Burlingame and a member of the public
MINUTES
Commissioner Hinckle noted that in the May minute's it should be noted that the minutes being discussed
were the March minutes as there was not an April meeting. Commissioner Hinkle made a motion to
approve the May 4, 2017 minutes as amended. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Kirchner and
unanimously approved.
CORRESPONDENCE
Commission received an email from Brenden Kelly regarding the landscaping at the fire station on
Hillside. Commissioner Kearny forwarded it to staff for response.
PUBLIC COMMENT
None
Parks Superintendent noted the Commission will not be voting on the awards tonight. They will review
the nominations tonight and visit the sites prior to the July meeting at which time voting will take place.
OLD BUSINESS
1. Sustainable Landscape Award
Commissioner Kirchner noted there are 9 nominees for the Sustainable Landscape Award.
Commissioners discussed the reasons they nominated the addresses and will visit the addresses
during the month of June so a vote can be made at the July meeting. Letters will be sent to the
addresses to inform the owner of the nomination and request permission for their participation. Only
the addresses granting permission will be included in the finals.
2. Business Landscape Award
Commissioner Kirchner stated there are 7 nominations for the Business Landscape Award.
Commissioners discussed the reasons they nominated the addresses and will visit the addresses
during the month of June so a vote can be made at the July meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
None
REPORTS
1. Parks Superintendent/City Arborist
Eucalyptus Tree Removals on Burlingame Ave to be completed by the end of June. Assessment
testing for an additional 15 trees will be done in June and July.
2. Director Glomstad
Glomstad reported the deadline for applications for the opening on the Beautification
Commission is Friday, June 2.
3. Commissioner Hunt
None
4. Commissioner Hinckle
Commissioner Hinckle noted she feels that the Broadway plantings & landscaping are lacking
and inquired if something can be done to improve the look of the street plantings. Staff noted that
the planting is new and will need a couple of seasons to take and the pots are maintained by the
Broadway BID.
Hinckle expressed for the record acknowledgement of the work done by tree worker Mike on the
Sanchez Ave. trees.
5. Commissioner Kirchner
Commissioner Kirchner noted he was unable to attend the most recent El Camino Real Task
Force meeting and he would meet with staff to get caught up on the discussion.
6. Commissioner Kearney
None
The next Beautification Commission meeting is July 6, 2017. There being no further business, the
meeting adjourned at 7:24 pm.
