Approval of Minutes Approve the minutes of the June 19, 2014 regular meeting 3. Public Comments Members of the public may speak about any item not on the agenda. The Ralph M. Brown Act (the State and local agency open meeting law) prohibits the Commission from acting on any matter that is not on the agenda. Speakers are asked to fill out a `request to speak' card located on the table by the door and hand it to staff, although provision of a name, address or other identifying infomation is optional. AGENDA. 8/21/14pmted 8115114 euw STAFF REPORT To: Parks and Recreation Commission Date: August 21, 2014 From: Margaret Glomstad, Parks and Recreation Director Subject: Placement of Information Kiosks in Parks Staff recommends the Commission discuss possible park locations for new informational kiosks. BACKGROUND In order to increase community awareness of recreational programming and City sponsored activities, the Parks and Recreation Department has installed an informational kiosk in Ray Park and will be soon installing one in Washington Park. In addition, Mills Canyon has three kiosks at three of the entrances; the Bocce Ball courts and Community Garden also have one each. Additional locations are yet to be determined. DISCUSSION Input from the Commission regarding what parks should have informational kiosks and where in those parks should the kiosks be placed is requested. FISCAL IMPACT The cost per kiosk is between $1,200 and $4,000 depending on the type, size, and installation of the kiosk. EXHIBIT A. Sample of a kiosk 1 1 \ . , .\ .�y. 0 STAFF REPORT To: Parks and Recreation Commission Date: August 21, 2104 From: Margaret Glomstad, Parks and Recreation Director Subject: Review of Parks and Recreation Department Mission Statement RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends the Commission review the current Parks and Recreation mission statement and either (1) confirm the mission statement is relevant to the current programming and structure of the department and should remain as is or (2) assign an ad hoc committee to work with department staff and community members to develop a new mission statement for review by Commission. BACKGROUND The current Parks and Recreation Department mission statement is: The Burlingame Parks and Recreation Department is Creating a Better Place to Live, Work and Play by: • Providing well -maintained playgrounds, street trees, park spaces & recreational facilities; • Offering a high -quality, diversified program of recreational activities; and • Supporting local community groups. Is the current mission statement a blend of realism and optimism? Does it serve a real purpose that includes value, inspiration, plausibility, and specificity? Does it convey the value of the Parks and Recreation Department and why it exists? Does it inspire and encourage staff? Does it sound completely reasonable and plausible, and be as specific and relevant as possible. Does it serve what the community desires for their parks and recreation opportunities?
