To: Parks and Recreation Commission
Date: August 21, 2104
From: Margaret Glomstad, Parks and Recreation Director
Subject: Review of Parks and Recreation Department Mission Statement
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the Commission review the current Parks and Recreation mission statement
and either (1) confirm the mission statement is relevant to the current programming and
structure of the department and should remain as is or (2) assign an ad hoc committee to work
with department staff and community members to develop a new mission statement for review
by Commission.
BACKGROUND
The current Parks and Recreation Department mission statement is:
The Burlingame Parks and Recreation Department is Creating a Better Place to Live, Work and
Play by:
• Providing well -maintained playgrounds, street trees, park spaces & recreational facilities;
• Offering a high -quality, diversified program of recreational activities; and
• Supporting local community groups.
Is the current mission statement a blend of realism and optimism? Does it serve a real purpose
that includes value, inspiration, plausibility, and specificity? Does it convey the value of the
Parks and Recreation Department and why it exists? Does it inspire and encourage staff?
Does it sound completely reasonable and plausible, and be as specific and relevant as possible.
Does it serve what the community desires for their parks and recreation opportunities?
