Nominees: Jim & Pauline Murray Field under consideration: Bayside Soccer Center
Date of Application: December 8, 2003 Proposal for Field Name: MURRAY FIELD AT BAYSIDE PARK
Summary of Qualifications:
Jim Murray began service to the Burlingame Community in 1972 working with the newly formed AYSO; serving first as a
coach and referee. That year, he also coached a Bobby Sox softball team and helped the league become established. In 1974,
in addition to his soccer coaching and referee duties, Jim became the Burlingame Area Commissioner for AYSO Region #63
and served as Regional Commissioner from 1975 to 1979.
In 1980, Jim founded Burlingame Boys Soccer Club. This was the beginning of what we know today as CYSA (California
Youth Soccer Association). Four other boys' teams in Burlingame joined and the girls' soccer team also became a part of this
CYSA League. Jun has been active on the CYSA Board from 1986 until the present.
From 1980 to 2000, Jim coached and was instrumental in the development of The Women's Soccer Association. The
Association grew to 10 teams in 1986 and there are about 20 teams today. Jim was also part of the groups that lobbied the City
Council for the development of the Burlingame Soccer Center. When the facility was in place, he started a Women's 35 &
over soccer league and a Men's 35 & over soccer league.
When Irish Football wanted to come to Burlingame, the Parks & Recreation Department staff turned to Jim for information
about the sport. Jun became familiar with the sport when he formed an Irish Social and Sporting Club in 1985. The Irish
Football now has developed into a strong program for 8 to 14 year old boys & girls.
Pauline Muirwas a pioneer of sports for girls in Burlingame. She coached and served as league officials for both soccer and
softball. Pauline served as President of Burlingame Bobby Sox in 1974 and helped develop the future of girls' softball in
Burlingame. In 1974-75, she was the Commissioner of AYSO Region #63 and coached in 1979.

Teen Forum Results
The Youth Advisory Committees from Millbrae and Burlingame met at the Millbrae
Community Center on Sunday, October 26th. Of the various issues discussed, four were
selected by the group to pursue during the year as part of the Committees' workplans.
Listed below is a brief statement about each of the four issues.
1. Substance Abuse
The easy accessibility and limited consequences leads to alcohol consumption. Peer pressure
and lack of parental guidance are also factors.
In a year from now, we would want to see less alcohol use; we want the social norm to be no
drinking rather than to drink. Two important tasks would need to be:
-parental education
-tougher enforcement for people who get away with selling it to minors, false ID's.
2. Discrimination
Our sentence to summarize our topic was "People are discriminated against due to
differences..."
In a year, we want to eliminate most of the slurs and discrimination. However, we saw this
as too idealistic. To start progress toward eliminating discrimination, we want there to be
more awareness of differences and how something you say can effect another person. We
want more knowledge of what you are doing or saying. For example, if someone at school
says something like "That's so gay" we could tell them not to say that. Our group also
`,. wanted to make "gay" not such a negative term and make it more positive. We also wanted
no more negative slurs. These are all the things that we decided we could do to start
eliminating discrimination.
3. Academic pressure
There is a lot of pressure placed on students by their parents to succeed in school and to
be involved in outside activities. The pressure includes performance on tests (S.A.T., A.C.T.
and honors placement exams). The goal should be to help students not feel such pressure
from outside sources.
4. Need for more activities
To offer a variety of successful teen activities that appeal to all groups of teens. One year
from now, we should be offering numerous successful activities/events for teens.
