HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 2003.09.18MEETING MINUTES Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, September 18, 2003 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairman Ed Larios at 7:22 p.m. in Conference Room "A" at Burlingame City Hall. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Dittman, Heathcote, Kahn, Larios, Lawson, Muller; Youth Commissioner Webb Commissioners Absent: Erickson, Minderinan Staff Present: Parks & Recreation Director Schwartz Others Present: Deborah Dong, 21 Arundel, Burlingame MINUTES Minutes of the Commission's July 17, 2003 regular meeting were approved as submitted. OLD BUSINESS A. Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) Report — Youth Advisory Commissioner Webb reported that the YAC had their first meeting of the school year on September 2nd and elected Jake Rouse as Chair and Grant Gilliam as Vice -Chair. The YAC will participate in the Beach Clean up on Saturday, September 20t' and will hold an all -City 7 /8d' grade dance on September 26]. B. Teen Center Dinner Dance — Discussed in the Special Meeting with the Millbrae Parks & Recreation Commission earlier in the evening — Minutes attached. PUBLIC COMMENTS Deborah Dong stated that she is applying for a seat on the Commission. NEW BUSINESS A. Update on Burlingame High School's Construction Impact on School and Citv Tennis Facilities — Director Schwartz reported that BHS' construction project will not impact the tennis courts during the 2003-04 school year. If the courts are ever to be impacted, the City will receive notice at least three months in advance to prepare options. M Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, September 18, 2003 — page 2 REPORTS A. Parks & Recreation Department Report - Director Schwartz reported the following: 1. The City Council is currently in the process of interviewing applicants for two seats on the Commission. Council recently adjusted the number of seats on the Commission back to seven, as planned when the Commission absorbed the duties of the Senior Commission. Currently the Commission has nine seats, with one vacancy. The terms of Commissioners Heathcote, Kahn and Minderman expire in October. Heathcote, Kahn and Deborah Dong are applying for the two seats. 2. The water faucet in Washington Park playground area was repaired the day after it was reported by a member of the public and is in perfect working condition, despite reports published recently in the San Francisco Chronicle. B. Commissioner Lawson described the progress of the Washington Park Playground Committee. The design work has been completed and construction should begin after the first of the year and be completed before Spring. Diagrams and renderings of the playground are on display at the Recreation Center. C. Commissioner Kahn asked about a drama program for one of her neighbors. Schwartz suggested referring her to the Burlingame Community Theatre, who is planning a show for the winter at Burlingame High School ..� D. Lawson also noted that the Our Lady of Angels festival will be held on September 20th and 21st with lots of activities for all ages. E. Chairman Larios informed staff that the group using the BHS gym on Sundays is not leaving the facility in a clean condition. F. Revenue Report - See attached. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at Burlingame City Hall.
