HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 2003.05.15MEETING MINUTES Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, May 15, 2003 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairman Ed Larios at 7:02 p.m. in Conference Room "A" at Burlingame City Hall. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Dittman, Erickson, Kahn, Larios, Minderman, Muller-, Youth Commissioners: Warden, Webb Commissioners Absent: Heathcote, Lawson Staff Present: Parks & Recreation Director Schwartz Others Present: Muffie Calbreath, 1113 Rosedale Avenue, Burlingame; Russ Cohen, 605 Lexington, Burlingame; Don Pope, 1617 Marco Polo Way, Burlingame MINUTES Minutes of the Commission's April 17, 2003 regular meeting were approved as submitted. �. OLD BUSINESS A. Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) Report — Youth Advisory Commissioner Webb reported that the YAC dance in April raised $1,800 and that the YAC will be donating at least $1,000 to the Teen Center Fundraising account. Youth Advisory Commissioner Warden reported that YAC will be selling cotton candy at Art in the Park on June 7dh & 8th B. Senior Resources Handbook — Commissioner Dittman announced that she completed the computer versions of the 2003-2004 Senior Resources Handbook. Director Schwartz will have the Handbook put on the City's website and print copies for distribution. C. Teen Center Dinner Dance — Schwartz said that a dinner dance is being planned for November 15th and relayed a message from Commissioner Lawson that Butch Wax and the Glass Packs is unable to play at the event. Muffie Calbreath, who has worked with the YAC on several fundraising events, said that day was selected because many people would be home for the BHS-San Mateo Little -Big game and Mills-Capuchino traditional rivalry. The "dance -after -the -football -game" would be held at either the Recreation Center or the Sheraton Hotel. The commissioners discussed the pros and cons of each location, including caterers, bands, revenue opportunities, etc. The dance would include both the Millbrae and Burlingame communities and feature a king and queen of the event. Commissioner Dittman will contact a local band that plays music from the 50's, 60's and 70's. The dinner dance committee will meet again on May 22"d at 7:00pm at the Recreation Center to establish the budget, fund-raising goals, prices, etc. Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, April 17, 2003 — page 2 .-IN PUBLIC COMMENTS - None NEW BUSINESS - None REPORTS A. Parks & Recreation Department Report — In addition to the attached report, Director Schwartz reported the following: 1. For the first time, beer and wine will be sold at Art in the Park by the Chamber of Commerce and the Parks & Recreation Department. Commissioners Dittman and Muller agreed to assist with the booth on Sunday. 2. The Mills High School Golf Coach sent a letter of appreciation to the City for allowing the team to practice during the season at the Burlingame Golf Center at no charge. 3. Staff is beginning the process to determine if the Parks & Recreation Departments of Burlingame and Millbrae should be merged. The process, to be completed in September, will include input and meetings from staff and commissioners from both cities. B. Commissioners 1. Commissioner Kahn, noting that last month's meeting was held on Passover, asked that the Commission no longer hold meetings on religious holidays. 2. Youth Commissioner Warden reported that she will be attending Pitzer College in September. The Commissioners discussed the recruitment process to fill the upcoming vacancy. Commissioner Minderman stated that the restrooms recently completed in Ray Park are very sophisticated, noted that the Burlingame Girls Softball program is very well organized and complimented staff on the professional look of the Summer Recreation Brochure. 4. Commissioner Erickson reported that the Burlingame Aquatic Center is one of the best swim facilities he has ever seen; stated that the amount of people using the community facilities at Burlingame High School has been great; and asked about the status of the Burlingame Golf Center. Director Schwartz said that the facility is still due to be closed on July 9t', but that staff and the operator have been meeting in hopes of renegotiating the current agreement and keeping the facility open. 5. Chainnan Larios asked if the tents on the BHS field during the track meets use stakes that penetrate the synthetic grass (staff has worked with the track "1 organizers to ensure the safety of the field) and about the rental arrangement of the BHS gym for the Sunday basketball program (rental fee is paid to the City, with some of the,funds going to the School.for maintenance costs). NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at Burlingame City Hall.
