HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 2010.11.18MEETING MINUTES Regular Meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, November 18, 2010 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairperson Castner-Paine at 7:02 pm at Burlingame City Hall, 501 Primrose Road, Burlingame. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Castner-Paine, Carlton, Fisher, Eaton, Hesselgren, Shanus Commissioners Absent: La Mariana Staff Present: Director Skeels; Administrative Secretary Helley Others Present: Charles Voltz — 725 Vernon Way; Steve Baum — 2120 Adeline Dr; Dan Schwartz — 1435 Bellevue; Ben Cohen — 2018 Trousdale Dr; Jeff Griffith — 2145 Roosevelt; Colin Preston — 2 Bayside, #2, San Francisco PUBLIC COMMENTS Charles Voltz spoke from the floor with respect to the City's responsibility to residents regarding a recent rash of raccoon sightings in Washington Park and a recent home invasion by a raccoon through a dog door in the middle of the night causing injury to the family dog. MINUTES The Minutes of the October 21, 2010 regular meeting were approved. OLD BUSINESS A. Dogs off Leash in Public Parks — Skeels updated the Commission on their previous decision to form a sub -committee to meet with residents and interested parties to discuss the issue in further detail. Commission deferred the item to the December meeting when the newly appointed Commissioners would be present to hear the background of the issue and have a chance to participate in the discussion on direction from this point. NEW BUSINESS A. Commission Rotation- Discussion — Castner-Paine handed the gavel over to Commissioner Eaton. Chair Eaton ran the remainder of the meeting. Parks & Recreation Commission Minutes November 18, 2010 — Page 2 REPORTSIHANDOUTS Staff Reports 1. Monthly Report — Skeels reported that the work on the Washington Park small diamond dugout is moving along nicely. 2. Washington Park Tennis Court Lights — Follow Up Actions; Skeels reported one of the two coin boxes is awaiting a part (only the box near the practice court is operable at this time) and that the timing of the shutoff for the lights has been resolved. The ten o'clock end time seems to be working fine. 3. Temporary Signage in City Parks — City Council Direction — to be discussed at the December Commission meeting. 4. Correspondence — Letter from Susan Price to Commission regarding the inadequate warning time given to the players that more coin was needed or the lights were going to turn off. Skeels reported that this issue has been resolved since the receipt of the letter. Commissioner Reports Commissioner Fisher encouraged the visiting commission applicants by letting them know as an outgoing commissioner that his experience has been fulfilling and hopes the same for them. Commissioner Eaton noted the condition of the grass on lower Bayside field being "patchy" and inquired of Skeels what could be done to amend the damage. Skeels noted Supervisor Disco of the Parks Division has seeded the area and with the recent rains expects "grow back" of the grass in the area. Commissioner Shanus inquired of Skeels the timetable for replacement of the Bayside sign at the entrance to the park. Skeels reported that Supervisor Disco was looking into the replacement of the sign. Shanus further inquired as the use of Washington Park Baseball field by the San Mateo Union High School District, will the BHS team be using the field and are the financial arrangements still the same? Skeels confirmed the BHS team will be using the field and the financial arrangements between the City and the District remain unchanged. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission is scheduled to be held on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Burlingame City Hall.
