HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 2010.06.20MEETING MINUTES Regular Meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, June 17, 2010 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairperson Castner-Paine at 7:06 pm at Burlingame City Hall, 501 Primrose Road, Burlingame. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Commissioners Absent: Staff Present: Others Present: PUBLIC COMMENTS Castner-Paine, Fisher, Carlton, Shanus Hesselgren, La Mariana, Eaton Director Skeels; Administrative Secretary Helley None There were no public comments MINUTES Approval of the Minutes of the May 20, 2010 regular meeting were tabled until the next regular meeting. OLD BUSINESS A. Budget 1. 2010-11 Budget Update - Director Skeels reported that City Council is set to adopt the budget at the June 21 meeting. 2. Revenue Brainstorming_- Commission suggested a more aggressive Business solicitation approach by the City. B. Temporary Signage in Cites — Commission tabled item until next regular meeting. C. Consider Request for Extending Dog Off -Leash Hours in Washington Park — Commission tabled item until next regular meeting. NEW BUSINESS A. Consider Renaming Bayside Park — Commission discussed the fact that Bayside is strictly a sports field. The Park has no play structure and therefore the Commission is considering renaming the area either Bayside Fields or Bayside Sports Complex. Commission has tabled further discussion until another meeting when more Commissioners could be present for a discussion and possible decision. B. Burlingame Golf Center PropertX — Commission discussed future use of the property. It was agreed by all that the facility should be kept as a recreation facility. C. Status of July and August Meeting Dates — Commission moved to cancel the July 15 meeting due to vacation schedules and to resume regular meeting with the August 19, 2010 meeting. D. Art in the Park Assessment — Commission observed the attendance of the 2010 event was low although there was great weather and good merchandise. The question of adequate publicity was brought forth. A suggestion was made of closing off Burlingame Ave during the event to create a synergy between the event and the businesses and restaurants on the Avenue might help increase attendance and visibility of the Art in the Park event. SMUHSD — Update on meetings reported 4. Community Education of City Commissions Powers and Duties — Skeels explained staff would be posting a description on the city website of each city commission's areas of advisory capacity to the City Council for to purpose better informing the public. 5. Correspondence - None Commissioner Reports Commissioner Shanus reported that the BYBA Invitational Tournament was set for the second week in July and the Billie Sue Tournament is this weekend, June 10, 2010. Commissioner Castner-Paine reported on Oct 15-161h the CDC will be giving a course in Replacing Lawns and Lawn Structure at the Lane Room at the Library. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission is scheduled to be held on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Burlingame City Hall.
