HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 2010.04.14MEETING MINUTES Joint Meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission & The Youth Advisory Committee Wednesday, April 14, 2010 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Commissioner Castner-Paine at 7:05 pm at Burlingame City Hall, 501 Primrose Road, Burlingame. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Castner-Paine, Fisher, Eaton, Hesselgren, Shanus Commissioners Absent: Carlton, La Mariana Staff Present: Director Skeels; Recreation Coordinator Cheney; Administrative Secretary Helley Others Present: Alessandra Daskalakis — Vice Chair, Justine Huang — Treasurer, Alessandra Shanus — Chairperson, Derek Wun — Secretary, Tessa Diamond, Maddy Gebhard, Shannon Hoy, Ali Santana PUBLIC COMMENTS There were no public comments MINUTES The Minutes of the March 25, 2010 regular meeting were approved as submitted. OLD BUSINESS Chairperson Castner-Paine welcomed the members of the Youth Advisory Committee to this joint meeting and asked them to introduce themselves. The Committee reported projects and activities that took place during the year such as All City Dances, Princess Project and developing of a survey to determine the needs of teens in the area. The Committee has hosted canned food drives during the All City Dances and donated the collected food to Call Primrose. Two years ago, the Committee hosted a Drug Awareness Night with the County Drug Task force with was attended by 190 parents. They plan on hosting another night in the next year. Fundraising by the Committee is utilized to fund Committee events and to donate to the Burlingame Youth Scholarship Fund. The Committee currently consists of 10 members, however, they are voting next month on the possibility of raising the membership to 15. Commission thanked the Committee members for the information and their hard work in the community with the teens. Commission and Committee decided the YAC would visit the Commission quarterly to update on activities, etc. Parks & Recreation Commission Minutes April 14, 2010 — Page 2 NEW BUSINESS A. 2010-11 Bud2et Status — Skeels reported that approximately eighteen (18) unfilled positions city wide will not be filled. There are only three (3) positions with people filling them that will be eliminated. Two of the three positions are Parks Department positions, a landscape worker and a tree -worker. REPORTS/HANDOUTS Staff Reports 1. Monthly Report — Attached 2. Correspondence — Skeels read a letter from citizens who are requesting the have "dog -off leash" hours be allowable in the afternoons in Washington Park from 4-7pm. The petition and letter was signed by eleven residents who frequent the Park with their dogs in the afternoons. 3. Commissioners Training Workshop — Skeels reported that the original date for the workshop was cancelled and has been rescheduled to October of 2010. Commissioner Reports Commissioner Eaton reported he had been told by a couple of residents that the public restrooms at Washington Park and the Washington Park large ball field restrooms have intermittently been out of hand towels and soap. (Staff reports the restrooms are stocked with toilet paper only. Paper towels and soap have not been provided for the last 20 + years due to theft and vandalism of dispensers. The toilet paper is frequently stolen soon after re -stocking.) NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission is scheduled to be held on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Burlingame City Hall.
