HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 2011.03.24MEETING MINUTES Regular Meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, March 24, 2011 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Chair Eaton at 7:01 pm at Burlingame City Hall, 501 Primrose Road, Burlingame. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present Commissioners Absent: Staff Present: Others Present: PUBLIC COMMENTS None Eaton, Shanus, Bulotti, Castner-Paine Hesselgren, Baum, Griffith Director Skeels; Administrative Secretary Helley; Office Assistant II Borba; Recreation Coordinator Buchanan None MINUTES Approval of the Minutes of the February 21, 2011 regular meeting was postponed to the April meeting. Presentation by programming staff: Kevin Buchanan, Recreation Coordinator, spoke about the programs he oversees for the department which includes the Village Park Preschool, Middle School Sports program, Adult sports and various sports camps. The preschool program consists of eight part-time teachers who teach 107 preschoolers. Kevin is putting on a fundraiser for the program at the Recreation Center on May 6th. The fundraiser subsidizes the cost of a music specialist and art supplies for the program. The fundraising goal amount is $10,000. Kevin summarized the middle school sports program by listing there are 9 sports offered during the school year with approximately 400 kids who participated in at least one sport during the 2010-2011 school year. The program utilizes about 46 coaches and paid officials/referees throughout the school year. New for program for the upcoming year is an agility class, with 27 enrolled and a cheerleading program with 10 enrolled. Programs also under Kevin's direction are the following adult sports: Women's soccer (6 teams), Men's Basketball (8 teams) and a drop -in men's soccer league. Kevin will be introducing new camps such as a British Sports, Capture the Flag, a summer volleyball league with free clinics by Pt String Athletics, Starting Lineup softball camp and a new multi sport camp at the Burlingame Sports Center in the upcoming year. Commission thanked Kevin for his presentation and all the work he puts into the programs for the benefit of the students. OLD BUSINESS A. Dogs off Leash in Public Parks — The sub -Committee will report at the April meeting B. Burlingame Golf Center Land Use — Commission tabled item to the April meeting C. Foundation Formation for Parks & Recreation — Skeels will be following through on local foundation contacts for the April meeting. NEW BUSINESS None REPORTSIIIANDOUTS Staff Reports 1. Monthly Report — Attached 2. Staff Recruitment — Skeels reported the recreation department has hired Kari Thorson as a Program Coordinator/Building Attendant. 3. Community Garden Update — Skeels reported the City has received a schematic plan from the garden club and the city attorney is finalizing an agreement. 4. Burlingame Aquatic Club — Report on Operational Negotiations; Skeels reported the City and BAC are still in negotiations. 5. Correspondence — None Commissioner Reports Commissioner Castner-Paine recommended the recreation center make rooms available to the public for non -class use. Next Meeting The next meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission is scheduled to be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at Burlingame City Hall.
