IV. FROM THE FLOOR Speakers may address the Commission concerning any matter over which the
Commission has jurisdiction or of which it may take cognizance that is not on the agenda. Additional public comments
on agenda action items will be heard when the Commission takes up those items. The Ralph M. Brown Act (the State
local agency open meeting law) prohibits the Commission from acting on any matter that is not on the agenda.
Speakers are asked to fill out a "request to speak" card located on the table by the door and hand it to staff, although
provision of name, address or other identifying information is optional. Speakers are limited to three minutes each,
although the Commission may adjust the time limit in light of the number of anticipated speakers.

BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION
May 7, 2015
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:30 pm by
Chairperson Kirchner.

Present: Chairperson Kirchner, Commissioners McQuaide, Dittman and Hinckle
Absent: Commissioner Hunt
Staff: City Arborist/Park Supervisor Disco
MINUTES
Minutes of the March 5, 2014 meeting were approved.

1. 2015 Business Landscape Award

Tree Planting on Trousdale
Commissioner McQuaide stated that Trousdale is a fast street. She suggested putting a median
down the center of Trousdale with trees could calm the neighborhood down. There are concerns
with tree planting where underground utilities are. Commissioner Dittman stated another concern
is how it would impact property owner's views. Arborist Disco reported he would ask Public
Works, Traffic, Safety and Parking Commission and Director Glomstad to see if a median on
Trousdale is possible. Commissioner Kirchner stated they would continue the discussion at the
next BBC meeting.
2. Dale Perkins -Business Landscape Award
Commissioner McQuaide stated she is concerned about Dale Perkins continuing to do the
watercolor for the Business Landscape Award winner. Commissioner Kirchner stated that there
should be some recognition for Dale Perkins and his contributions. Commission discussed
different options for recognition. The Commission will discuss it further at the next BBC
meeting.
Updated Street Tree List
Arborist Disco stated he adding two new trees to the "Official Street Tree" list for planting strip
areas 4-6 ft. wide.
1) Quercus suber "Cork Oak" evergreen tree reaching a height of up to 60ft tall.
2) Cappinus betulus `fastigiata-Eurpoean Hornbeam' deciduous and can reach a height of up to
50ft and is columnar in shape.
REPORTS
Parks Supervisor/City Arborist
1) "Trees — "A Big Deal" tri-fold brochure was handed out to the Commissioners. The brochure
is available in the Planning Department, and on the Burlingame Website. Staff is exploring
other options for distribution.
2) The homeowner at 2300 Davis Dr. paid the fine of $4800.00 and the money was placed into
the Tree Replacement Fund to purchase trees.
3) The Public Works Department is putting together a plan for citywide water conservation with
input from the Parks Division. The Parks Division in 2014 reduced water usage by over 20%
from the previous year. The Parks Division will continue to water young street trees to
encourage their survival.
4) Athletic field watering has been reduced and will be monitored for safety.

3. Commissioner Kirchner
Commissioner Kirchner commented on the May 4, 2015 Joint Session meeting with Council
where he presented on -going and future issues for the Commission.
4. Commissioner Hinckle
Commissioner Hinckle received a response from Ms. Reeves from Caltrans about her letter sent
in November of 2014 regarding the Floribunda/ECR Eucalyptus. She also had concerns
regarding the spelling and grammar errors in the minutes.
5. Commissioner McQuaide
Commissioner McQuaide stated that the Beautification Commission should not rush decisions
regarding issues that affect the City.

7. Commissioner Dittman
Commissioner Dittman commented on the May 4, 2015 Joint Session meeting with Council
regarding a Residential Landscape Award for draught tolerant landscapes and would like it on the
next agenda.
The next Beautification Commission meeting is June 4, 2015. There being no further business, the
meeting adjourned at 7:30pm.
