The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:30 pm by
Chairperson Kirchner.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Kirchner, Commissioners McQuaide (arrived at 7:05pm), Hunt and Hinckle
Absent: Commissioner Dittman
Staff: Parks & Recreation Director Glomstad and Recording Secretary Borba
MINUTES
Minutes of the June 4, 2015 meeting were amended and approved.

None
OLD BUSINESS
1. 2015 Business Landscape Award
The Commissioners discussed the 5 Landscape Award nominees and then voted. The winner of
the 2015 Business Landscape Award was Watcher Investments at 49 Park Road. The
presentation from Council will tentatively take place on October 19, 2015 at the City Council
meeting.
2. Tree Planting on Trousdale
The item was tabled until the September meeting to allow for Commissioner McQuaide to
participate in the discussion. Commissioner McQuaide's ideas for planting trees on Trousdale
will be forward to the Commissioners from Secretary Borba.
3. Recoinition of Dale Perkins
The Commissioners discussed reimbursing Dale Perkins for some of his expenses when preparing
the watercolor for the Business Landscape Award winner. Commissioners Hunt, Kirchner and
Hinckle agreed to donate funds to cover some of Dale Perkins expenses. The discussion
regarding recognition of Dale Perkins will be continued at the September meeting.
4. Residential Landscape Award for Drought Tolerant Landscapes
Commissioner Kirchner presented information on the residential landscape award for drought
tolerant landscapes and proposed general goals, committee format and the award. Secretary
Borba will forward the proposal to the Commissioners.
NEW BUSINESS
1. Commissioner Workshop Review
Commissioner Hunt attended the workshop and felt it was beneficial. Director Glomstad stated
that Commissioners made connections and were interested in meeting again to share information
and learn what other commissions are doing.
2. Commissioner Rotation in October
Director Glomstad stated that four seats are up on the Beautification Commission this year in
October. Three seats will be for a 3 year term and one will be a 1 year term. Council will decide
who is appointed to which term.
REPORTS
1. Parks Supervisor/City Arborist
None
2. Parks & Recreation Director
1. Due to the retirement of City Clerk Mary Ellen Kearney, a new City Clerk, Meaghan Hassel -
Shearer has been appointed.
2. The Theme Block policy revision is on the August 17 Council agenda. Director Glomstad
encouraged all Commissioners to attend.
3. The revision to the Tree Ordinance is anticipated to be discussed at the September 21 Council
meeting.
4. Arborist Disco, an Independent Arborist and Director Glomstad have been meeting with
Caltrans staff walking El Camino Real to come up with a plan for tree removal, stump removal
and replanting.
5. Staff is discussing having a study session at the next Commission meeting to discuss removal
guidelines.
6. For the Caltrans proposed work at Floribunda and El Camino Real, Arborist Disco received a
letter from the Caltrans Historical Conservation Group reportingthe removals would not be
significant. Jen Pfaff has been encouraging citizens to respond by August 23 deadline.
3. Commissioner Kirchner
Commissioner Kirchner commented on the Complete Streets project at Carolan Avenue and the
Peninsual Interchange project in San Mateo. He requested the landscape plan for the Broadway
overpass project
4. Commissioner Hinckle
Commissioner Hinckle read a note from David Hinckle about his concerns regarding the planters
on Broadway and the maintenance of the irrigation connection.
5. Commissioner McQuaide
None
6. Commissioner Hunt
Commissioner Hunt commented that she noticed the trees had been removed on Vancouver that
was part of the June appeal.
7. Commissioner Dittman
None
The next Beautification Commission meeting is September 3, 2015. There being no further business, the
meeting adjourned at 7:16pm.
