HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - BC - 2013.03.07BURLINGAME BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION March 7, 2013 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:31 pm by Chairperson Dittman. ROLL CALL Present: Chairperson Dittman, Commissioners Hunt, Kirchner and McQuaide Absent: Commissioner Hinckle Staff: Parks Supervisor/City Arborist Disco and Parks & Recreation Secretary, Borba. MINUTES - Minutes of the February 7, 2013 meeting were approved as submitted. CORRESPONDENCE Staff Parking Lot Permits for the Rec. Center where distributed to the Commissioners PUBLIC COMMENT None OLD BUSINESS Business Incentives for Landscape Improvements Commissioner Kirchner prepared a handout of "Talking Points" for the Commissioners to review and prepared a flyer of past Landscape Award winners. Commissioner Dittman suggested taking the flyer out to businesses along with the Burlingame Business Landscape Award Application and using the talking points to approach business owners to apply. Commissioner McQuaide suggested when handing out the applications and flyers to encourage business owners to beautify the front of their businesses. NEW BUSINESS Arbor Day, Thursday March 7, 2013 at the Burlingame Golf Center Commissioner Hunt reported that the 2013 Arbor Day celebration at the Burlingame Golf Center was a big success. The local school children along with the Park Staff planted 8 trees, 5 Acer Rubrum `Red Maples' and 3 Lagerstroemia Indica. Mayor Keighran presented a proclamation declaring Burlingame a Tree City USA for the 34th year. Council members Baylock and Brownrigg along with Jimi Schied from CalFire were also in attendance. Public Art Commissioner Dittman will submit an initial presentation to the Commission on including Public Art in the Beautification Commission charter at the May meeting. REPORTS Parks Supervisor/City Arborist Disco • Bayside field number 1 grandstands have been renovated by Parks staff to eliminate any safety problems. • Bocce courts construction continues with the addition of irrigation, planter boxes, arbor and benches. Landscaping will be installed soon followed by the placement of the final court surfacing. Estimate opening of courts in late April. • Irrigation and new sod was install at Ray Park near sand box to eliminate mud and dust and increase aesthetics of park. • Tree Crew continues grid pruning sycamores in residential area behind Washington Park. • January street tree planting is underway. 100 new and replacement trees will be planted by the end of March. Commissioner Kirchner None Commissioner Hinckle None Commissioner McOuaide None The next Beautification Commission meeting is April 4, 2013.
