February 7, 2013
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Beautification Commission was called to order at 6:30 pm by Chairperson
Dittman.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chairperson Dittman, Commissioners Hunt, Hinckle, Kirchner and McQuaide
Staff: Parks & Recreation Director Glomstad, Parks Supervisor/City Arborist Disco and Parks & Recreation
Secretary, Borba.

PUBLIC COMMENT
Resident Paul Wallach addressed the commission about his concerns regarding the removal of several large trees
and the large condominium complex purposed to be built at 1509 El Camino Real. His concerns also addressed the
relative size of existing homes to the height of the purposed new structure. He encouraged the Commissioners to
attend the next Planning Commission meeting if they have any concerns on the impact this project will have on our
community.
OLD BUSINESS
Arbor Day, Thursday March 7, 2013 at the Burlingame Golf Center
Arborist Disco reported that the location for the 2013 Arbor Day celebration will be at the Burlingame Golf Center
at 250 Anza Blvd at 10:30am. The City will be planting 8 trees on Arbor Day, 5 Acer Rubrum `Red Maples' and 3
Lagerstroemia Indica. Arborist Disco encouraged the Beautification Commissioner to attend and participate in the
days activities. Commissioners Hinckle, Hunt and Kirchner agreed to attend.
Public Art
Donald Mulliken with the Burlingame Art Society and San Mateo Arts Commission and Leona Moriarty with the
Burlingame Art Society and Art teacher at the Burlingame Recreation Center addressed the Commissioners
regarding what the Burlingame Art Society does within the City of Burlingame. They display their art at City Hall,
the Recreation Center, Music in the Park and Maloofs store front on Burlingame Ave. They also provide
scholarships to needy artist in Burlingame. Leona let us know that the Peninsula Art Museum will open at
1776 California Drive in March of 2013. Donald informed the commission that the San Mateo Arts Commission
provides grants and he would keep us informed.
The Commissioners discussed several ideas regarding displaying art through out the city. They all agreed that the
City of Burlingame — Art in Public Places Policy was a good guide to move forward. Commissioner Dittmann and
Hinckle agreed to form a sub committee to collect ideas on how to change the charter. All commissioners are to
email there ideas to Parks Secretary Borba and she will forward them to the sub -committee.
Business Incentives for Landscape Improvements
The Commissioners further discussed exploring possible ways to encourage businesses to improve their store front
appearance and landscape. Commissioner Kirchner presented the Commissioners with a flyer of past Landscape
award winners on it. Commissioner Dittman suggested taking the flyer out to businesses and coming up with some
talking points to approach business owners to help encourage them to improve their landscaping. It was decided
that the Commissioners will email any ideas to Parks Secretary Borba who will forward them to Commissioners
Kirchner and McQuaide who will present the suggestions at the March meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
Change in Burlingame Beautification Commission Meeting Location
Director Glomstad requested that the Beautification Commission meeting location be changed to the Burlingame
Recreation Center at 850 Burlingame Ave. starting in March 2013. She stated that it is more convenient to meet
where staff is located and the building is already open. The Commissioners will all be given parking passes to use
for parking in the employee parking lot during the meetings. Commissioner Hinkle moved that the Beautification
Commission meetings be move to the Burlingame Recreation Center, Commissioner Hunt seconded the motion and
all 5 voted in favor.
July 4, 2013 Burlingame Beautification Commission Meeting is Cancelled.
REPORTS
Parks Supervisor/City Arborist Disco
• The Rose Garden in Washington Park was expanded to include 20 new rose bushes.
• The Tree Crew with assistance from the Landscape crew started Sycamore pruning on the streets
behind Washington Park.
• October Tree planting has been completed with the planting of 119 street trees.
• The Tree Crew started the January planting of 94 trees.

Commissioner Hinkle is concerned about the Eucalyptus that fell on El Camino Real in late December. The
trunk is still on the side of the road. Supervisor/Arborist Disco reported that Caltrans will be out to remove
the trunk in March along with planting Accolade Elms to replace trees that have been removed on El
Camino Real.

The next Beautification Commission meeting is March 7, 2013. There being no further business, the meeting
adjourned at 7:43 pm.
