COMMENDING THE HONORABLE JOSEPH A. BRANSON
UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT
AS A JUDGE OF
THE SUPERIOR COURT OF THE STATE OF
CALIFORN'IA IN AND FOR THE COUNTY OF SAN' MATEO
WHEREAS, the Honorable JOSEPH A. BRANSON, Judge of the
Superior Court of the State of California, in and for the County
of San Mateo, is voluntarily retiring from that position upon
the expiration of his present term of office; and
WHEREAS, he is a life-long resident of San Mateo
County, having resided in the City of Burlingame during the
larger portion of his life, and having received his primary and
secondary education in the public schools of that City; and
WHEREAS, he received his degree of LLB from Hastings
College of the Law in 1936, in which year he was admitted to
practice law in the State of California whereupon he commenced
his practice in the County of San Mateo; and
WHEREAS, he served the City of Burlingame as Judge of
the City Court of the City of Burlingame until the abolition of
that and similar courts with the establishment of the municipal
court system which now obtains in the State of California; and
WHEREAS, he subsequently continued his service to this
City, and to others, by appointment as a judge of the Municipal
Court, Central Judicial District, County of San Mateo, State of
California, which district embraces the City of Burlingame within
its boundaries; and
WHEREAS, he was appointed to the bench of the Superior
Court of this State and County, where he continued to serve the

people of this City and of this County; and
WHEREAS, as a citizen, lawyer and judicial officer he
has actively participated in the explosive growth of San Mateo
County during the past two decades and more, and particularly in
the consequent changes in and expansion of its judicial system;
and
WHEREAS, he has earned and enjoys the respect of the
citizens of Burlingame in particular and of the citizens of San
Mateo County in general, for the efficient, capable and under-
standing manner in which he has ever conducted himself in
judicial office, and for his great and consistent ability to
temper the occasional rigidity of the law with kindness and with
a keen understanding of human nature as it was displayed by the
litigants before him, and by their counsel
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED by the City
Council of the City of Burlingame, and it does hereby order that
the Honorable JOSEPH A. BRANSON be, and he is hereby, commended
and congratulated upon the occasion of his retirement as Judge
of the Superior Court of the State of California, in and for the
County of San Mateo, for his long and dedicated service to the
citizens of the City of Burlingame and to all of the citizens of
San Mateo County, and for the efficient, kind and learned per-
formance of his duties upon the benches of both the inferior
courts and the superior court upon which he sat.
RESOLVED, FURTHER, that it is the wish of the Council,
as a body, and of the Councilmen individually, that his

retirement years be long, healthy and happy.

Burlingame, do hereby certify that the foregoing resolution was
introduced at a regular meeting of the City Council held on the
2nd day of January, 1973, by the following vote:
