HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso - CC - 071-1975RESOLUTION N0. 71-75 (1975) ESTABLISHING SISTER CITY ASSOCIATION WITH NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT(, TO PROVIDE A BICENTENNIAL "BRIDGE ACROSS THE NATION" that: RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of Burlingame, California, WHEREAS, the City of Burlingame Bicentennial Committee,was:formed for the express purpose of fostering and implementing appropriate observances of our nation's 200th anniversary during the bicenten- nial period; and WHEREAS the City of New London, Connecticut. has enjoyed a uniquely significant and historical role in the birth of the Nation as the site of the first associated intercolonial resistance to the Stamp Act and the British Monarchy; and WHEREAS, the New London Sons of Liberty did lead the way to independence by urging the colonies to "reassume their natural rights and the authority which the laws of Nature and God have invested them with..."; and WHEREAS, New London was the home of Nathan Hale, who courageous- ly gave his life so that his country might live; and WIEREAS, the town of New London aided the Revolutionary cause as an important base for privateers; and WHEREAS, it is both appropriate, and in furtherance of the City of Burlingame's Bicentennial celebrations, that a link be forged to one of the cities which played such a prominent role in the birth of our Nation by means of communication and cultural exchanges and a sharing of plans of Bicentennial observances; and WHEREAS, Herbert.I._Mandel, the Chairman of the Bicentennial Committee of the City of New Lonaon, has encouraged such exchanges and the establishment.of.a.city association with Burlingame as a step in providing an exceptionally unique "bridge across the Nation" for Bicentennial observances; NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED, THAT: 1. Tjiis Council hereby authorizes the Mayor, Irving Amstrup, and the City of Burlingame Bicentennial Committee to establish a city association with New London, Connecticut, to provide a Bicen- tennial "bridge across the illation" by co,munications and cultural exchanges and a sharing of plans for Bicentennial observances. 2. This Council hereby convoys to Herbert I Mandel and his Committee its willingness and pleasure in associating on such an exchange basis with a city which has played such a uniquely historical role in our Nation's birth. 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to the Mayor of New London, the Chairman of the Bicentennial Committee of the City of New London, and to each member of the City of Burlingame Bicentennial Committee.
