HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - PR - 2014.08.21APPROVED MEETING MINUTES Regular Meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission Thursday, August 21, 2014 The regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to order by Chair Lau at 7:00 pm at the Burlingame Recreation Center, 850 Burlingame Ave., Burlingame. 1. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Commissioners Absent: Staff Present: Others Present: Lau, Martin, Hesselgren, Baird, Colson Eaton, Baum Director Glomstad & Administrative Secretary Helley Monica MacMillan, Burlingame; Alex Galanter, Burlingame 2. MINUTES The Minutes of the June 19, 2014 regular meeting were approved. 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS None 4. OLD BUSINESS None 5. NEW BUSINESS a. Placement of Information Kiosks in Parks — Staff Report; Information included in kiosks will be schedule of use for park, list of upcoming events and important information regarding wildlife in the area. Each kiosk will be updated regularly. Mills Canyon currently has three kiosks, the Bocce courts, the Community Garden and Ray Park all have one kiosk. A kiosk will be placed at Washington Park and other parks to be considered are Pershing, Village and Cuernavaca. b. Parks & Recreation Department Mission Statement — Staff Report; Glomstad suggests the Commission create an ad hoc committee to review the current Park & Recreation Department statement. The committee could consist of two commissioners, members of the public and P & R employees. Lau appointed Commissioner Baird to the committee. Commission will check with the absent commissioners at the next meeting. Lau and Baird will solicit a "mature" representative from the public as well. Glomstad will contact any interested employees. 6. REPORTS/HANDOUTS a. Parks & Recreation Reports Monthly Report — a. Community Center Master Plan Update — The next phase of the Community Center planning is the conceptual drawings and preliminary CEQA work. b. Foundation Update — Hesselgren reported the donation of the movie screen by the BMC will be used for the Camp Out/Movie in the Park on August 22. Revenue was made from the sale of beer and wine at the Music in the Park series. On October 18th the Foundation is sponsoring a Bocce Ball Tournament with prizes. Registration for teams will be taken on the Foundation website - http://www.supportburlingameparks.org/. c. Upcoming Events: August 22: Movie in the Park in conjunction with Camp Out in the Park. d. Water Rationing in City Parks — Glomstad reported the Parks Department has reduced watering by 20% and has been adjusting the percentage of reduction based on the amount of "stress" each park can handle without incurring loss. e. Fuel Reduction — Murray Field and Bayside Park has been "fuel reduced" by removing the dead growth by the path between the driving range and the walking path below that area. CalFire crews have been working to clear the area. f. "A" Frame Marketing — Glomstad reported the purchase of several "A" frames to advertise the events and programs the Parks & Recreation Department is sponsoring. b. Correspondence — None c. Commissioner Reports — Hesselgren inquired about graffiti that is on the fence of the walkway by the tennis club. Glomstad noted that the brick wall belongs to the homeowner who is on the corner. 7. ADJOURNMENT The next meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission is scheduled to be held on Thursday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Burlingame Recreation Center.
