Regular Meeting on Thursday, November 15, 2018

The duly noticed regular meeting of the Burlingame Parks & Recreation Commission was called to
order by Chair Lewis at 7:04 pm at the Burlingame Recreation Center, 850 Burlingame Ave,
Burlingame. Lewis extended a welcome to new Commissioners Holzman and Lee.
2. ROLL CALL
COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Lewis, Palacio, Milne, Holzman & Lee
COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Matthews & Ardito
STAFF PRESENT: Parks & Recreation Director Glomstad, Recreation Supervisor Barry,
Recreation Coordinator Sanchez & Administrative Assistant Helley

Commissioner Milne made a motion to approve the October 15, 2018 minutes. The motion was
seconded by Commissioner Palacio and was approved. 3-0-2. (Matthew & Ardito absent)

7. NEW BUSINESS
a. Family Campout Recap — Coordinator Sanchez
Coordinator Sanchez reported on the 6th Annual Family Campout event. The event has grown from
originally 200 participants in 2013 to 750 in 2018. The goal of the event is to create an atmosphere for
the community to enjoy the experience of camping while staying close to home and allows the
participants the opportunity to connect with friends in the community. In 2016, the event was
recognized by the California Parks & Recreation Society, receiving the prestigious Award of Excellence
for Building Communities.

After reviewing event timeline, activities provided and post survey responses, Sanchez elicited input
from Commission on possible locations for the 2020 & 2021 Campout; suggestions for possible
sponsorships and any feedback the Commission felt would be helpful for staff going forward.
Commission suggested alternate park locations of Ray and Bayside Park for 2020 & 2021. Also
suggested was to increase the amount of food in lieu of a t-shirt each year. The gift could still display
the department and a sponsor logo. Sponsor suggestions were REI, Costco and to look at local
establishments for opportunities and to present levels of sponsorship.
Commission expressed appreciation for an event well planned and executed by staff.
b. Community Center Schematic Plan Update
Director Glomstad reported since the update to the Commission on September 20, 2018, additional
refinements have been made to the schematic plan and project costs and a phasing plan has been
developed.
At the November 5, 2018 City Council meeting, the Council approved the schematic plan, project costs,
and phasing plan. Work on the design development documents will begin immediately.
c. Chair Rotation & Welcome to New Commissioner
Lewis welcomed the new Commissioners. She passed the gavel to Commissioner Milne and
acknowledged Commissioner Palacio as the Vice -Chair.
d. Status of December Meeting
Commission moved to cancel the December 20, 2018 meeting and to reconvene on January 17, 2019.
8. STAFF AND COMMISSIONER REPORTS
a. Parks & Recreation Department Reports
Glomstad reported on the following: Annual Tree Lighting is on December 7th at 5pm, winter
programming registration begins on Dec 5th and the Parks Master Plan phone survey will start after
Thanksgiving. Due to the poor air quality, the Recreation Division will be cancelling outdoor activities
until it improves.
b. Commissioners Reports
Commissioner Milne reported on the Washington Park committee meeting and reported the committee
chose Landscape Structures as the equipment vendor for the project.
9. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS
Commissioner Lewis requested that "Role of Commissioners" be on the January agenda for discussion.
10. ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:08 pm.
