Library Board of Trustee Minutes
October l 8,_2016
I. Call to Order
President Altmann called the meeting to order at 5:30PM.
II. Roll Call
Trustees Present: Kerbey Altmann, Andy Blanco, Randi Murray, Mike Nagler,
Trustee Absent: Lisa Rosenthal
Staff Present: Brad McCulley, City Librarian
Sidney Poland - Recorder
Jeannine Culligan -Administration (Accounting)
III. Library Board of Trustee,Minutes
The September 20, 2016 Board of Trustee Minutes were unanimously approved.

IV. From the Floor (Public Comment) - No one from the public attended.
V. Reports
A. City Librarian's Report -Highlights
1. Personnel
• Since our last meeting, Megan Wong and Raina Tuakoi have given
birth to two healthy children, Camille Wong and Treavor Coe.
• Elaine Tai is our new Reference Department Librarian. The library
- is now fully staffed in all departments.
2. Strategic Plan - On September 20th, most of the staff participated
in a SWOT (strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats)
exercise relating to the Strategic Plan. Brad and Jane Light
moderated the work session.
3.- Library Card -The library purchased $10,000 new library cards.
The adult cards were designed by Ian Johnson and the children's
cards by a group of children's books illustrator.
4. Marketing Topics Discussed by the PLS Marketing Group
• Library at SFO - The idea of a possible library
installation/exhibit at SFO was reviewed. Proposal has to be
made to SFO-and their architects. Brad will contact Carol Frost.
• Food for Fines begins in November. Ray and Jenny plan to
create a video to promote the program.
• Winter Reading is also around the corner with each library
having different schedules and procedures.

• Analytics on Demand-Jenny Miner is the library's
representative to the PLS Analytics on Demand committee. The
committee is discussing how the individual libraries use AOD and
determine how these demographics,relate to each libraries' service
areas.
• PLS Passport - the committee will continue to look for new ideas
on how to effectively launch this project during National Library
Week.
B. Foundation Report
The annual report will be in mailboxes the week of November 7+h. Plans
are being formulated for the donor event on November 18th.
VI. Unfinished Business
A. Presentation by Tobi Becerra of the Silicon Valley Fund
Tobi Becerra was unable to attend the meeting. Brad will contact Tobi
Becerra to reschedule the meeting for November 15th meeting. The
Trustees noted the particular issues that they would like Tobi Becerra to
discuss during her presentation.
• Discuss support fees and explain how the fees are broken down.
• How are the fund invested?
• Who determines what areas the funds are invested in?
• What can the money be spent on?
• Performance as compared to benchmark.
B. Trustee Development Grant
�.. Kathlee Kane, City Attorney, has approved the payment process for the
Trustees' Grant to library staff who are currently working towards their
MLS.
VII. New Business
Annual Staff Appreciation Event
Francesca Tashijian of Sixtos Cantina invited the library staff to hold their
annual staff appreciation event at Sixtos. Trustee Nagler and Sidney will meet
with Francesca next week to discuss details of the event.
VIII. Announcements
Jeannine Culligan reviewed the City's monthly budget status report with the
Trustees, as well as the Trustees Account for June of 2016. The Trustees
requested that the possibility of consolidating funds in their account be placed
on the November agenda.
VIII. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 7:OOPM. M/S/C (Nagler/Murray)
The next meeting of the Library Board of Trustees will be held on November 15,
2016 in the Library Conference Room at 5:30PM.
