City Librarian Report to Board of Trustees
L, November 15'1,2016
VON-
Personnel.
o Slight set back with Passport Intake program, our passport agent had to resign suddenly due to family
emergency out of the country. We will be interviewing for this position soon.
o California Library Association Conference—Kim Day, Jenny Miner, and Ray DeLara all attended
CLA in Sacramento. Judging by the post conference conversations everyone learned a great deal and
they received our two PR Excellence awards on the Library's behalf for our"Shelfie Video" and for
Maryam Refahi's work on the "Summer in Austenland"program.
General Updates:
o Strategic Plan 2016— The SP Planning Committee met for its last time Nov 1 st to finalize the plan
before it is presented to the Board of Trustees. The Library very much appreciates everyone who
donated so many hours of meetings to contribute to our future "road map." Trustees, Foundation
members, and over 1,500 members of the public helped
o New Library Website Coming—The Library is working with the City Manager's office to create a new
website that will definitely be more user friendly and look fabulous. We hope to have it by Spring!
o Grazie Mille Mark Lucchesi! - In honor of Molly Stone's 30th anniversary, store manager and former
Foundation member Mark Lucchesi donated $1000 to the Foundation/Library. Mark and Molly Stones
have always been very generous to the Library and we are all very appreciative of his largesse.
o Popular Programs—Halloween Puppets drew a big crowd of parents and kids, Repair Cafe returns with
30 items repaired, Fall Bingo was a fun family event, ESL Conversation group has been meeting
weekly, and Great Books & Discussion is just the thing for the more cerebral members of our
community.
o Food For Fines—Beginning Nov 14th through December 31 st we will have our annual Food For Fines
program, bring in canned goods for the Second Harvest Food Bank and have your fines waived.
o Safety–Staff recently attended NIMS (National Incident Management System)at the City Corp-yard to
prepare for possible local catastrophes.
1
o Marketing—PLS "Library Passport"—We discussed PLS Passport ideas. The idea of patrons visiting
other libraries as the main premise has changed. Instead, passports will contain a variety of library
- specific activities with the options to visit other libraries. We shared SMCL's bingo card to spur some
ideas of the kinds of things that would be included in the PLS Passports. The group will continue to
brainstorm ideas for this PLS wide campaign for National Library Week in April 2017. --Burlingame
Library Marketing Plan—We need to come up with a Marketing Plan for our marketing efforts. This
includes specific goals that we want to accomplish with our community outreach efforts, website, and
social media. There was some discussion about the possibility of hiring a temporary Marketing
Strategist to develop this plan for us. --Burlingame Library App—We discussed the possibility of a
BPL specific app that would be mainly used for information about upcoming events and services. Any
linking to the catalog for account access would redirect to phone's browsers or would launch PLS
Boopsie app. The idea that our new website, launching in February 2017, will be mobile friendly and
could possibly be an alternative, easier method instead of developing an app in-house.
Patron Quotes:
"Can you tell the people at the Cafe that the chicken shwarma I bought was the best thing I've ever
eaten. I'm not kidding you, it was so good."
