City Librarian Report to Board of Trustees
Augustl6th,2016
Personnel:
• The Library's F/T custodian, is out until the end of September on medical leave. Staff will be
pitching in to help out (rotated kitchen duties and emptying their own desk waste bins), the rest will
be handled by hourly staff
• Our Acquisitions Specialist(the employee who orders all books and materials) is out for a family
emergency with an unknown return date. This puts a strain on the Tech Svcs Dept as this is a key
position and the Tech Svcs Mgr is about to go out on maternity leave.
• We have 3 new hourly employees Jennifer Monroy (Passport Intake Agent), Eddie Manio
(Circulation), and Sharon Johnson (Easton). F/T librarian interviews begin next week.
• Megan Wong will be on maternity leave starting in September—Kim Day will be acting Tech
Services Manager
News:
• Summer Reading Update: Family Fun Night was a great success this year—they were held in the
Children's Room this year which helped in two ways: the excitement and community engagement was
`.. front and center for all to see as you enter the library and there were no limits on the number of
attendees or size of the crowd because the space is so open.
Next up is the Open House Celebration with a salute to the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics on Thursday
Aug 18th 7pm—period costumers, refreshments, live music—come dressed in your favorite 30's attire.
• Strategic Plan 2016—close to 800 surveys completed so far with the end date most likely this Friday.
They are split evenly between paper and online. We are now entering paper forms in Survey Monkey,
then on to the analyzing the data collected. The Library Bike was instrumental in enticing people to stop
and fill out surveys. Aug 15th is our Mission and Values "crafting" meeting.
 t1
:
1
• Harry Potter book debut party! A complete success thanks to Kathy V, her team plus all the other
departments that chipped in to help—there were crafts, face painting, bingo, book quizzes, and
refreshment donations from the National Charity League and Fika Cafe. Over 500 attendees including
the whiney ghost Moaning Myrtle stuck in the LL bathroom.
MILT
• Repair Cafe success! Thanks to Trustee Rosenthal, Terry Nagle and the CEC, Green Citizen, and all the
volunteers for a great first Repair Cafe program. 65 people attended bringing 125 items to be repaired
with most repaired, keeping them from being disposed in the land fill.
-----------
Marketing Update:
• Because of Summer Reading and the Strategic Planning process we have put the Marketing Team on
hiatus.
Safety Update:
• We had our first Fire Drill in a very long time here and staff did very well. Our facilities rep, Fred
Ghilain, Bart Spenser and the Fire Department Rep helped critique and review with us. We will be
reviewing our missing children procedures next.

Patron Quotes:
"Dear Geralyn & Staff,
Thank you so very much for helping my sister out during a very difficult time in our lives. She loves
this library. We loved it during our childhood. I NOW love it for even more reasons: you and the
wonderful women at the front desk"
