A. Donor Wall
Paul Jamtgaard of Group 4 met with members of the Capital Campaign

Pat requested that Paul refine the wood design and find a way to reduce the
cost.
3
B. Cost of Donor Wall
The Trustees felt that the Donor Wall should not be financed with Capital
Campaign Funds and agreed to allocate funds to underwrite the cost but
expressed concern about the initial cost estimate. Therefore, the Trustees
passed the motion of Trustee Rosenthal that they are ready to allocate
additional funds from the Duncan Fund for the Donor Wall upon receiving
more detailed information regarding cost of the project and the design plan.

City Librarian Report to Trustees
January 20, 2015
Personnel—Vera Warrick, BPL's long time cataloger, has retired. Andrea San Andreas
will be taking over the cataloging duties. Andrea started at the Burlingame Library as a
Page in the Children's Department back in 2002. She not only received her bachelor's
degree while working at the library but recently completed her MLS at San Jose State
University. She has worked her way up to a Library Assistant and is now working as a
Cataloging Librarian in Technical Services.
Klara Kim, a Children's Librarian is out on maternity leave through April.
Jeannine Culligan, Library Assistant in the Library's admin finance, fell outside of work
and broke her wrist. She had surgery on Tuesday, January 13 and will be off at least two
weeks.
Staff Workshop— On January 29, Edmond Otis will present a workshop to staff- Dealing
with Difficult People: Making Libraries Safe and Sane. We had Edmond back in 2012 and
he was very well received.
Congratulations to the Web Team and specifically Ray DeLara for being named #1 Best
Book-related Instagram Acct by NYPL!
Employee Appreciation—January 25, 2015
PLS—Linda Crowe, PLS Director, announced her retirement. Linda came to PLS in 1983
and has been a major force in the growth of PLS and the model of sharing and
collaboration among libraries. She was also instrumental in building the mega system of
PLP and has been the Executive Director of PLP and Califa. Her visionary approach has
benefited libraries throughout California -she developed many entrepreneurial
enterprises including working with CENIC to bring broadband infrastructure to libraries
throughout the state. She plans on continuing to work part-time for Califa on the CENIC
broadband project.
Susan Hildreth will be replacing Linda as Executive Director for PLS, PLP, and Califa.
Susan served as the State Librarian of California from 2004-2009 and has served in
leadership positions in California public libraries since 1980. Susan will complete her
term as the Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington, DC
on January 18, 2015 and will assume her new position on March 1.
1
Problem Patron —We had an incident with a patron viewing pornography back in
December. One of the reference librarians approached him and reminded him that he
was in a public space and that there were children in the area. He claimed that the first
amendment protected his rights to view such materials. He may want to take this
further and I've asked staff to enforce our policy which states "Because others may be
involuntarily exposed to what you view, the library asks that in consideration of others
you exercise judgment in what you view on these public workstations. If what you view
causes discomfort to others staff may intervene." I've also asked staff to have this
individual contact me if he needs to discuss this further.
Local HistoryArchives - Simon Ho, a SJSU intern and Sue Reiterman have begun the
project of going through our local history files and getting them digitized. They spent a
great amount of time reviewing, purging, and scanning files and with the help of John
Piche and Ron Bulatof, a retired archivist and volunteer, they created the beginnings of
a popular local history digital archive.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/burlingamelibrary/collections/72157646824061893/
Tap, Swipe, Discover Project—Tommy McMahon, one of our Reference Librarians, was
awarded a $7,215.60 Pacific Library Partnership grant for the Tap, Swipe, Discover
Project, which will implement` ouch-screen computers throughout the Burlingame
Library. The terminal on the upper level will highlight a reader's advisory website with
book lists and reviews. The main level terminal will be used to highlight a different
subscription database each month. The lower level terminal will be used to display
schedules for the new tech lab and study rooms. Each terminal will marry traditional
services with a modern delivery method that is more reflective of the world we live in,
which will help develop digital literacies and enhance the overall library experience for
our patrons.
Millennium Project—The renovation project is on schedule. The Lower Level is almost
complete and we will reopen on January 26. The Main Level closed on January 5 and
construction is in full swing. Areas other than Childrens, the hallway, bathrooms, and
self-check, the ML is closed off to the public with visqueen. The Circulation staff has a
small desk in the front by the door and the Reference staff are sharing a desk with
Childrens. Reference staff will move to the LL when that are is opened. The Childrens
Room will remain open until February to accommodate January Poetry Month and will
move to Easton for the month of February when construction will begin in the Childrens
Room. The new Meeting Room on the Upper Level is the temporary home of the
Circulation department until the Automated Materials Handling System is installed —
beginning of March.
