February 9, 1949
A regular meeting of the Burlingame Library Board was held on
the above date. Present were: Massers Hall., Reynolds, Fichtner and
Colby. Also present was Mrs. Dombaugh, Assistant Librarian.
The minutes of the meeting of January 5, 1949 were read and
approved. The Librarian's report was read and ordered filed.
Bills to the amount of $3057.84 were ordered paid
Payment of all outstanding book bills was ordered and the
Librarian granted $250.00 for book purchases for the month of March.
The Librarian reported that Mrs . Ely would resign as of April 1,
1949. She also reported that the societies using the library
regularly were : Council of Social Agencies, Science of Mind, Girl
Scout Council,
Mr. E.C. Fichtner reported on the visit of the lighting
engineer. The reccommendations he made in regard to the lighting
of the library were concurred in by Mr. Fichtner. It was decided
that fixtures for the work room, office and main floor stacks
should be purchased from Phillips &Edwards Electric 9orporation
as follows: 13 SL 201-962 1 SL 1504-96, 2 SL 1204-48.
Mr. Hall's report on proposed audience with the City Council
was ordered filed.
The Librarian reported the fines 2 cents and a cent per day, the
non-resident fee $2.00 per year.
A letter from Miss Smith was read and it was moved, seconded and
carried that the Board request an additional 30 days sick leave for
her. Mr. Hall was asked to inquire into her retirement status before
her resignation was considered.
On the reading of letters the requests of the Great Books
Foundation and the National Council of Catholic Women to use the
library assembly room were granted.
A motlon�twas made and carried that we delay action on the
appointment of Senior Librarian. Mr. Hall was asked to meet with
the Civil Service Commission accompanied by Mr. Love, and report
at the next Board meeting.
The appointment of Mrs. Alda Jett as part time help in Mrs.
Todd's place was ratified.
It was decided to ask Miss Thelma Reid to visit the library
and make suggestions as to service and staff.
Irs. Dombaugh was asked to prepare a preliminary budget for
the 1949/50 library year. She was also instructed to prepare
more publicity.
Mrs. Dombaugh reported on some of the library needs, namely:
Oatalog units, book truck, adding machine, vertical file. It was
decided to wait purchase of any of these until the bill for the
light fixtures is in.
Fred Colby reported that his resignation had nothing to do with
the library but was in protest over acts of the Civil Service
�--` Commission.
It was declared a policy of the Board that staff attendance at
professional meetings be encouraged and that reasonable expenses be
allowed.
It was moved, seconded and carried that no electrical work be
authorized until considered first by the Library Board.
Mrs-,i- Bombaug)A was: instructed to see to the cleaning of the
light glomes in the reading rooms and of the registers.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.
