Library Board of Trustees Minutes
November 19, 2013
I. Call to Order
President Rosenthal called the meeting to order at 5:30pm.
II. Roll Call
Trustees Present: Betsy Corcoran, Debra Donaldson, Deborah Griffith,
Lisa Rosenthal
Staff Present: Pat Harding, City Librarian
Sidney Poland, Recorder
Absent: Sandy Towle

The Trustees approved the minutes of the October 15, 2013 meeting. M/S/C

IV. Correspondence and Information
A. Statistics
The Trustees reviewed the October statistics. President Rosenthal noted that
circulation statistics at the main branch were down by -0.17% from the same time
period in 2013.
V. No one from the public attended.
VI. Reports
A. City Librarian's Report -'Highlights
1. Personnel Linda Santo, Reference and Adult Services Manager, will retire on
December 20th. Staff will host a tea in Linda's honor on December 18th. An in-
house recruitment will be held for this position. Staff members who are in the
Librarian I or II classifications are eligible to apply.
2. Children and Teen Department- Formation of a Teen Advisory Board is on the
drawing board for January 2014. Kelly Mackewicz, our Teen Librarian, will oversee
the project. Teens in grades 6-12 are eligible and will assist Kelly in planning teen
programs, as well as giving input on the design for the new teen space. A Lego club
is also in the plans for next year. If you have any Lego's in good condition that you
can donate, contact a Children's staff member.
B. Foundation Report
1. Annual Report-The report will be mailed out next week and will include a
presentation of the Our Library, Our Future campaign to the public.
2. Children's Tea-Janice Scattini and Wendy Upchurch are co-chairs of this event
which will be held December 8th. EventBrite is being used as one of the ways to
make reservations.
3. Annual Author's Luncheon-The annual book and author luncheon will be held
May 3, 2014 at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club..Authors for the event will be
Katie Hafner"Mother Daughter Me", and Ken Goldstein, "This is Rage", a Novel of
Silicon Valley and Other Madness. Lisa is also trying to contact Andrew Sean
Greer who wrote "The Story of a_Marriage" as a possibility for the third author.

VII. Unfinished Business
A. Grant Letter to Silicon Valley Community Foundation
`- The City Librarian will follow up with Michelle Fries of the Silicon Valley Community
Foundation regarding the grant she wrote requesting funds from the Roger and Jean
Hunt Duncan Fund. The Trustees approved allocating these funds in the amount of
$100,000 to Our Library, Our Future campaign.
B. Capital Campaign Update
Patty Anixter, Chair of the Campaign, will be presenting a Resolution to the Hillsborough
Town Council requesting their support for the Foundation's "Our Library, Our Future"
campaign. Trustee Griffith suggested the possibility of the Foundation presenting a
Resolution to the Burlingame City Council. Pat Harding noted that members of the
Burlingame City Council had expressed full support for `Our Library, Our Future".
C. Staff'Appreciation Event
• Pat Harding will confirm that the event will be held at Sixto's.
• Trustee Donaldson, Pat and Sidney will meet with Francesca January 6th to
discuss menu, set up, time etc.
• One suggestion for entertainment is a time line with pictures, comments on
events etc. Staff should be advised of time line so they can bring photos or
funny comments already written out.
VIII. New Business

`- IX. Announcements
The Trustees made the following requests and suggestions for programs and "Our
Library, Our Future".
• Teen Poetry Slam
• Trustee Corcoran noted that some of the people she has been talking to
would like a workshop for teens on how to go deeper than "Google" to
find information on the Internet i.e., original source material.
• Campaign support poster could be made for staff to voluntarily sign.
• Pins for staff to voluntarily wear saying " I support `Our Library, Our
Future" campaign.
• Campaign material should be available at public desks for staff to give to
patrons. This would include the Annual Report and a binder with
common questions and answers regarding the campaign. Also, a list of
names with phone numbers for interested donors who may have
questions regarding the campaign to contact.
• e-mails of City Council members should be made available for the public
to ask them questions about the campaign.
• Publicity for "Discover and'Go" should be made more available for
patrons.
• Terry Nagel has requested that Pat Harding write an article on "What's
New at the Library" for her newsletter.

X. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 7:OOPM. The next meeting of the Library Board of
Trustees will be held January 21, 2014, in the Library Conference Room.

of the meeting cancellation will be sent to City Hall for posting.
