City Librarian Report to Trustees
January 21, 2014
Personnel—Brad McCulley was hired as the new Reference and Adult Services Manager
Librarian. His first official day was December 23, 2013. We are very excited to have Brad
serving in this new capacity. We now have an opening for a Librarian 1/11 to fill Brad's old
position. We are working with HR to start that process.
We had a very nice tea for Linda Santo on Wednesday, December 18th. Staff presented her with
a photo album of her long tenure at the Library. They also gave her a bike to use in her new
free time.
Kathy von Mayrhauser, our Children's Services and Easton Branch Manager, was diagnosed with a
brain aneurism and had emergency brain surgery on Christmas Day. She is doing well and
returned home on January 7th. Staff is scheduling meals for Kathy and her family for the next
few weeks. Kathy will be out of work for at least a month and will probably come back part-
time for a while.
Staff has been very helpful about filling in and sharing the various duties in the Children's
Department. I have also asked Cathy Somerton to take over the management duties for Kathy
until she returns.
Employee Appreciation Event— Sidney, Debra Donaldson, and I met with Francesca Tashjian,
from Sixto's Cantina. Sixto's can accommodate our estimated group size of 100. Francesca
quoted a $60 per person fee based on the cost of closing the restaurant during peak business
hours on a Sunday night. This is about twice what we have paid in previous years at the
Doubletree. As an alternative, Francesca suggested having a brunch on Sunday,January 26th for
a cost of approximately$30 per person. This is about the same cost as the Doubletree. The
consensus of the Trustees is to give it a try.
The $30 per person charge would include sodas, ice tea, coffee, tax and gratuity. The corkage
would be $10 per bottle (wine or champagne) and there will be a no host bar. If we want to do
mimosas there would be a charge of$15 per carafe of orange juice. There is tax and gratuity
that will be added to the corkage and juice as well.
We are scheduling the brunch from 10 AM —12:30 PM on January 26. This will allow staff,
working on Sunday, time to open the Library. Maryam put together the invitation and Sidney
and Jeannine have mailed them to Trustees, Foundation, and Advisory Board members. Staff
have received the invitation in interoffice mail.
One of our staff, Ray DeLara, is putting together a "film" of library programs and events in 2013.
Covered California—BPL partnered with Covered California and SMCO's Health Coverage Unit
.. to provide information about Covered CA. In December we had 6 events for patrons interested
1
in learning about Covered California and seeking assistance in signing up. We served
approximately 40 people during these sessions. We also had a program in January that
provided an overview of Covered California. Thirty people attended this program. We will also
be providing counseling and sign-up assistance on January 18, 2014.
Staff will also be participating in a hands-on learning session on reliable consumer health
resources as part of an initiative-"eHealth Training for Public Libraries. This is a project
supported by the UC Davis eHealth Broadband Adoption Project
GrantAwarded— BPL just received a PLP Innovation and Technology Opportunity Grant for
$9.438. Written by Brad McCulley, SCAN IT!Digital Film and Photo Conversion Project will
provide the technology and means for patrons to digitize personal photographs and film. The
project will serve two purposes:
• It will preserve a patron's family pictorial history and personal memories for future
generations
• It will give the Library, in partnership with the Burlingame Historical Society and with
the patron's permission, the opportunity to discover and archive historically relevant
photos and/or home movies for the benefit of the Burlingame/Hillsborough
community.
